How do I judge the value of AG coins?

Hi - I am very new to the hobby. I took over the job of going through my dad's coin collection now that he is too old to do it himself and I was hoping I could find some help here. I was wondering how to figure out the value of an "Almost Good" coin. For instance, I have a 1916-D Mercury dime, but it is in AG condition. If the grey sheet lists a good version of this coin at $750-825, what would an AG coin be worth? Is there a standard percentage that I would take off of the "Good" value for the AG coins? I have a few rare Walking Liberty halves as well that are in AG condition as well as a bunch of others in AG and I was hoping someone could help me figure out what these are worth.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

No clue, but red book says 1,000 for G. Just a wild guess but for retail i'd say 450-550?

you can't go by Red Book prices, they are inflated. Grey sheet is a better reference when it comes to pricing.

One thing you can check is heritage auction archives - again just to give the rough estimate of what the coin is worth. So 1916-D are going for between 510 to 575 in AG-3 condition. If selling I do not believe you would get that from a dealer. Plus the auctions list numismedia retail and wholesale prices - again just references. So go to heritage and join. Also keep in mind raw coins do not always bring as much as graded - again all of this is just reference material.

try looking at auction results at heritage auctions or teletrade.

    On Heritage's website AG3 have been going for $517.50 - $575.00 (Mar - Jun 2010) and G4 goes for $800.00 - $862.50.

My rule of thumb is that AG is about 60% of G-4.
