I was looking through some of my family's heirlooms and came across these coins. The quarter doesnt have a date on it, it looks as though there never was one. The dime says 1942, but there are so many dimes from then that I dont know which one it is. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
The Quarter is a Standing Liberty Quarter....either 1916-1917....this is a TY1 coin....value is about $.50-$.75 in this grade.... The Dime is a Mercury Dime and is worth about the same.... Look for the dates... 1916 1921 1926 In the dimes...if you have any of those dates show some photos... Speedy
Thanks for the info!! I have about 5000 coins that I have to go through- my great grandparents collected them and gave them to me when they died. I never thought to do anything with them until recently!
You might want to look for a Red Book....or under the same name as A Guide Book of United States Coins....the book is good but don't go by the price guide...sometimes its right...and sometimes...its way off... Speedy
to CoinTalk drogers. The date (1916 or 1917) was originally in the space below Ms. Liberty's toes. The 1917 D and S mintmarks were to the left of the date, so there's really no telling which of the four year/mint examples of the bare-breasted lady's coin you have. Speedy recognized it as a Type I by the absence of stars below the eagle on the reverse. With Liberty's cloak adjusted for modesty, the coin was minted through 1930, but anything earlier than 1925 is likely to be dateless except in the highest grades, as it wasn't until then that the design was again adjusted to recess the date slightly, which improved its staying power. :smile
Looks like you'l have fun dureing some cold winter nights going through those old coins!,just maybe you'l become a collector??????have fun and get that "RED BOOK"!
Explains why it was more expensive to get a 1924 quarter in VF/EF condition than any other coin minted that same year, lol... in fact I paid more for the quarter than the sum total of all the others that year (penny through dollar, no half dollar that year). Put together a 1924 year set as a Christmas gift for my grandfather who was born that year.
