Four Athens New Style Tetradrachms

    Whoever did the test cut on that coin didn't take any chances.

    It was a good buying opportunity, but given the scope of the new style tetradrachms and the Thompson catalog varieties, I don't think I will ever be able to form anything approaching a comprehensive collection. That would be truly a daunting undertaking.

    My only New Style tetradrachm - I got it in 2004, I suppose it's due some company.
    Wt./Size/Axis: 16.75g / 32.5mm / 12h

    Nice Cicada @akeady . Looks to be an obverse match to yours!
    This issue was the first one with controls that was placed on the amphora.
    Athens New Style Tetradrachm c 153/2 BC
    Obs : Athena Parthenos right in tri-form helmet
    34.2mm 16.80 g Thompson issue 12
    Thompson catalogue : Obs 66 : Rev NEW/not in plates
    Rev : ΑΘΕ ethnic
    Owl standing on overturned panathenaic amphora
    on which month letter A
    2 magistrates monograms in both fields
    LF symbol : Cicada
    All within a surrounding olive wreath

    So I had to get an example with a letter A!
    There are examples with the Cicada on the Right hand side that are not mentioned in Thompson which I have noted.

    And now I have it... thanks! It's got enough visual oomph despite the flan flaw to be a keeper!
