What he actually said was that anything that wouldnt get a CAC sticker at any grade would get a details grade. If a 64 would get a sticker as a 63 itll get a 63, if it wont sticker at any grade itll get a deatils slab Unless he just made a new statement in the last few days in an obscure source, at no point have they ever indicated that they will be gate keepers of what they deem worthy of being slabbed or not based off of value of coins they accept. Its much better to read their words directly from the source on the CAC forum where JA and his team for the new grading operations have several Q&A threads going
He said on a podcast that he would not slab details coins unless he felt they were collectible. He did not define what would qualify and what wouldnt.
This seller replied with he gets bulk deals and it doesn't matter. Some of these coins are 20 dollar coins in their grade straight. A vf35 straight is worth 20. There might be some people dumb enough to buy these. But straight uncleaned cons like this sell for what he's asking or less for these cleaned junk. This wastes time at the grading service.
So he was talking about what he thought submitters should do on I'm guessing an old podcast which he has done for years even telling people not to send coins to CAC if the value isnt there Like I said go read the multiple threads on the CAC forums where you can see the answers directly from their accounts and even ask that question if youd like
That video is October 13th. The CAC Forum threads are significantly more recent for the responses https://www.caccoin.com/forums/profile/comments/JACAC Thats him. https://www.caccoin.com/forums/discussion/545/q-a-with-cac-grading-operations-manager https://www.caccoin.com/forums/discussion/521/cac-grading-transition-faq-17-questions-answered Theres other threads as well
Years ago they would have. But so many collectors kept complaining that their coins were coming back in bodybags and they weren't getting anything for their money......
Would I submit these coins to PCGS? No. Do I care that someone else did? Once again the answer is no. I collect old and unique slabs and several people in the "traditional" numismatic community often look down their noses at me, as if I am crazy for paying money for plastic. My answer is the history, which is also why I enjoy collecting coins. What I find funny is that most people (including my family) outside of the numismatic community look down their noses and think that coin collecting "nerds" are crazy for spending 100's of times the face and/or intrinsic value on "small metal disks". Collect what you like, submit what you want. As for slowing down turnaround times, they paid their money just like everyone else.
I just wonder what JA would think if one of his three world class graders opened up a box of coins and inside were 30+ cleaned lowball Columbian exposition halves. In all his podcasts he talks about he's opening the grading service so people can "one stop shop" essentially. Instead of sending coins to pcgs then to cac. Paying all the shipping. He's not even advising people to cross their coins to his holder. And is designing the registry to even the field compared to the current pcgs setup. If a cleaned coin that is worth 20 uncleaned. I think he would have a problem with it. Not only are you wasting your own money but you're wasting time at the grading service. These don't need authentication to prove they aren't counterfeit. These are Columbians not 16d mercury dimes or 93 s morgans. Also, he talks about back in the 80s you graded the coin, encapsulated it and shipped it. Nowadays you have to photograph the coin and do the registry and there's a lot more involved. I can't wait to see what he refuses to encapsulate. I don't think anyone's asked about holed or plugged coins yet on his forum. So I think I'll just do that this weekend sometime. I'm curious where he will draw the line.
I couldn't agree more! "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Look at how "Nicely Toned" coins have collectors paying high prices. I don't understand why anyone would want coins that were not well protected and well cared for over the years, never mind paying a high premium for them. But, hey, that's what collectors of toned coins do. Who am I to say what they "should" or "should not" prefer? The rules about what coins are collectable and what they are worth ebb and flow with time. Some stand the test of time based upon their rarity. Others are fads. I think "toned" coins are a fad, but what do I know? And who cares. If someone likes them, let them go for it. Collect what YOU like. If you like dirty, grimy quarters, collect those. "Hey, look, I have this great dirty quarter here! Isn't it cool?!" It sounds the same to me as "Hey, look, I have this great toned quarter here! Isn't it cool?!" Yeah, it's cool, if that's what you like. When it comes to the value of what you collect, when you die it will depend upon the knowledge of the beneficiaries of your estate, the honesty of those they deal with and sell to, the time period in which they decide to sell and what people ascribe value to at that time. For all we know, slabbed, cleaned, Columbian, whatever they are, will be all the rage in 50 years from now!
I don't know what the new CAC TPG will do after they are fully up and running, but considering that you currently have to be a CAC member in order to submit, membership is by application, there is currently a waiting list to join, and they aren't accepting any new members at this time I highly doubt anyone will be submitting 30 cleaned Columbian half dollars anytime soon, so no need to lose any sleep over JA's three world class graders. They will be fine. Good lord, why do you care? Will it make you feel superior? No offense, but your posts come off as if you think you are better than the guy who submitted these coins.
I'm just curious. I'm curious how this will all play out. It is very interesting to me. And yes he has the waiting list. And has stated he will be keeping it this way.
I confess I have several Lincoln Wheat Cents graded by PCGS. They were on sale for a cheap price so I bought them up.
