I'll meet you halfway :smile The note was printed by Banque de France, in the French style, which is why it looks French. Yes, it was issued in Laos. Dave
Nice pick up! You'll have to look for the SN: K00000011C. It would be very cool to have your district number as the SN. I guess I'll have to look for a, St. Louis 8. Seems a challenge for any of us to get that low of a SN in our own districts. :smile
Very cool piece, Lettow! I think that's the highest value savings bond I've seen. Just curious -- is showing the name an issue on something this old? Also, if these are "Not Transferable" what happens to the value if the original owner dies?
Nice notes everyone! Conner1 - That's my favorite eagle on any banknote! Nice example there, too! :smile
Same here! I've been following the thread a while. Just want to say that everyone always has so many nice notes to share, even engravings and ephemera apart from notes. Everyone has such excellent taste in building their collections. I've come up short on recent bids on some notes in auctions over the last few weeks and took a break while I wait for something else to catch my eye. Great stuff here! Thanks for sharing. :smile
Connor: That will be my next addition. Yours is quite nice!!! I recently added a yellow seal North African occupational Silver Certificate. It is not in very good shape, but within my current budget. I'll post a picture later.
Thanks Dave, I've been looking for a affordable example ,funds are low, picked this up raw $220 @ Denly's of Boston, one light fold in the note, they graded it AU,I happy that the pictures they post are not juiced & the note looks better then the scan I posted !I like any notes with eagles or vignettes of eagles but the flying eagle is very nice engraving and I think it was also printed on a BEP Souvenir card if you just want the engraving from the same dies. connor P.S. i just looked it up the card was printed by the BEP it is Souvenir Card: # B199 from 1995 Back side series 1918 $1 National Currency "ANA/Anaheim,California" August 16-20 1995 Mint in this catalog $12.00
Great $1 Connor1. I have seen the souvenir card with this design and I've been tempted to pick one up. One of my favorite eagle vignettes.
US Savings Bonds can only be redeemed by the registered owner or an heir. If an owner dies and no heirs can be found, the government gets free money. The same thing happens with savings bonds found in unpaid storage units and safety deposit boxes. They remain on the government's books as a liability but they cannot be redeemed until the owner or an heir is found -- and no one is looking for the owners. IN this case, the registered owner was an organization. As far as I can tell, that organization is still around. While it is doubtful that any of its members read this board (they are likely in their 80s), I don't want to take the chance. It is possible that this bond was reported lost and one re-issued in its place so that this one is unredeemable. Whatever the case, I don't want to take that chance.
Got a couple Nationals recently -- posted some of them in the "post nationals" thread, but here's another. Pretty decent condition (plus I used to live in Newark).
Bought myself a nice rotator note. It was one of those spur of the moment, late night surfing the 'bay kind of buys.
Okay, here's my latest acquisition. It came out of my wallet a couple days ago. Pretty heavily circulated, but it's the lowest serial number I've ever found in pocket change. I'm thinking of starting a new thread on "your favorite note found in circulation" -- or has that been done already?
