A safe gamble?

So obviously you can come out on top or lose money here, but what are your thoughts? If you receive the average of each type of coin, will it be cheaper or cost more than buying them individually. I purchased one out of curiousity.

I bought one of thoose and yesterday bought 3 more! because I was so pleased with the first one..

I got an indian head penny
a buffalo nickel
a silver quarter
a silver nickel
a silver dime
a mercury dime
a steelie wheat cent
35x wheat cents from 1910-1939
13x wheat cents from 1940-1958
some other cool stuff. Made my money back easily.. just off the silver quarter.. it was in great condition.. when these guys said unsearched the mean it they just grab a handfull and toss it in a bag and send it to you.

 

i ordered rolls from the same people they have a website that isnt just an ebay store. The rolls were decent i didnt find anything amazing but not bad for the money and helped fill my newly started album. I ordered one of these too i should be getting it this week and i will post how i did too. I do believe them when they say unsearched cause the rolls i got weren't just forties and fifties and there where some nice BU's in the mix. Hope you find something good though.

I wouldnt say to get it in hopes of find a 1909 s VDB or anything but i just got it to fill my album and it was quicker than searching tons of rolls from the bank. I wont be ordering after this one probably because i would rather just buy individual coins and know i am getting what i need.

 

I am sure you are probably right, but I think it will be fun...at least until i realize i wasted $35 for sure.

 

I think that when that guy picks up all those coins his rug is going to be absolutely filthy.

 

it was fun searching through the rolls i got and it was great knowing they were all gonna be wheaties since i needed a ton as i had just started the album.

fyha i can see what you mean i didnt read feedback i had found out later the site i ordered from was in fact this seller on ebay but if anything was truely unsearched there would tend to be a few bad batches in the mix.

A silver quarter is typically worth $3.50ish. What was so special about yours?

 

nah they sell for $11 all the time on ebay. plus mine was in great condition.. thats $20 right there... the bag of coins only costs $29 so $9 the rest of the coins easily go over that and I made money.

 

I hate to burst your bubble, but it costs $35.90. And the most expensive UNCIRCULATED quarter i could find other than 1932 D or S was $10.75. So assuming your coin really does bring in $11, and its free to ship, and ebay does not charge you, that means your still $20 short of the quarter paying for it. And you will have to make an incredible deal on the quarter for that happen.

Realistically, you will get $6 if the coin is in GREAT condition. Which still puts you $25 short.

 

First, "unsearched" at best means unsearched by the dealer. There's no way they can assure you they weren't searched before they got them.

Running a few quick numbers here:

Typical price for a bag of 5000 "unsearched" wheaties: $300
Junk Silver Price: 12-13 times face.
Dealer "Junk Box" price for Indians, Buffalo Nickels and War Nickels: $1 each.
"Junk Box" price for a steel cent: $0.25 at most. (These are often giveaway items).

So by my calculations, you are paying approximately a 100% premium based on the dealer's assertion that the material came directly from some farmer's stash. Effectively, that's no worse a deal than playing the typical state lottery. I don't know if the "dream" is worth $15 bucks to you, but that's a personal call.

That said, I do wish to point out some inconsistencies in the seller's claims. A "coin counter" can't separate out bronze indians from lincolns, buffalos from jeffersons, nor mercs from rosies. In theory, it could pick out steelies and war nickels from other jeffersons.

Next, take a look at this site: http://www.pennies.com/depression.htm. You may notice that a) those kids look familiar, and b) the price at that site is $27.95 instead of $29.95. You may also notice that the site claims both "500,000 Old Coins hoarded from the Depression" and "This collection of over 1 million old US coins..." Which is it?

Finally, in a hoard dating back to the Depression as claimed, I would expect to see SLQ's and even a sprinkling of Barber coinage. If the material is unsorted as claimed, what happened to them?

 

Personally, I think anybody who goes for this is 4 pennies short of a dime.

Thanks for the information. When you point it out like that, it seems obvious. I suppose there is a chance that they missed a 1909 VDB S, but no, the money is not worth chasing the dream. Well, I guess ill take this $36 waste as a learning experience.
