3 Swiss (Vaud) shooting medals. I really like these designs which make one understand why these are so cool. Did my thing buying raw and will submit for my set. A recent addition that I was excited to acquire... 1913 Weinfelden (Thurgau) Richter # 1280a 25mm silver 600 struck Engraved by Holy Freres
And another from the same page of the Richter book... 1906 Arbon (Thurgau) Richter # 1275a 23mm silver 726 struck Engraved by Holy Freres This was also cast in bronze with an RRR scarcity rating. I'm satisfied with the more affordable silver example. It even came with the original display case. :kewl:
They realy are wonderful works of art, I cant decide which I prefer LOL the Ladies in national costume or the Shooting Festival at Yverdon
Still great ones guys. I dont think there has been one you've showed that isn't spectacular! How many are in that set? What do you think it would cost to complete a set? Do either of you think you'll be able to do it or even want to?
Zo, thanks for sharing them. They're all very nice! Question: Do you have any shooting medals designed by Wilhelm Mayer? He's a medallist from Stuttgart, Germany, and he founded a die-sinking establishment in 1860. According to the biographical information, he produced quite a few medals for rifle competitions. I would like to see some of his work. Chris
There are approximately 3000 different Swiss Shooting Medals, so to complete a full set would take a lifetime and a boatload of money. Holy Freres designed about 50+ different medals between 1900-1914 and while I doubt I can ever complete the set I will have a go. Before these two it had been over a year since I found a new Holy Freres medal for sale. You just have to wait for them to come along. Same with the Pidcock's Conder tokens. :kewl:
Thanks HiHo... It seems these are in the same collecting process as: Notgeld's with 13K plus National Bank Notes 14K plus Conder Tokens 8k? and now Swiss Shooting at 3k!!
The intent of my thread was was simply to show the intricate design work, not to highlight a sub series or theme. These mostly have very low mintage and finding quality pieces is a challenge in itself.
Absolutely amazing stuff! I'm in Illinois and there's a local German-American society that has a friendly shooting competition. But as far as I know, no fabulous medals!
20th Century Medals I have also recently been trying to expand this part of my collection. Interestingly, there are some inexpensive finds for 20th century materials. Simple, clean designwork. 1934 Fribourg, Federal Shooting Festival Richter-434a, Martin-249, Krause-91 Design: Willy Jordan/Paul Kramer Diameter: 50mm Composition: Bronze Mintage: 5,074 1929 Ticino, Federal Shooting Festival at Bellinzone Richter:-1465b, Martin-860, Krause-299 Design: Balestro/Hugenin Diameter: 50mm Composition: Bronze 1949 Graubunden, Federal Shooting Festival at Chur Richter-859 Design: Huguenin/Le Lockle Diameter: 27 X 35mm Composition: Silver
