Well, in my travels, I came across this one... Not sure what to think except that I think it has an ultra-cool unique look to it... Of course, I am just a geek, so that doesn't mean much... Anyway, took the best pics I could through the loop so let me know what ya think... Cause? Thanks in advance for the insightful responses... (doh, forgot to crop first!)
Looks like an extreme case of MD. Besides the date and mm, look at the coat and profile of Lincoln. The tail on the 0 appears to be the bottom of the 5, the part across he 5 appears to be the tail of the 9, The part in the loop of the 9 appears to be the 1. There may be other explanations, but this is my suspicion. Jim
Yeah, it would be extreme MD for sure, but I am glad you could pick that effect out from my poor pictures... Each number/letter has a larger version of itself 'rippling' out from it until it hits the adjacent letters... The interesting thing is that the primary numbers are raised, but the secondary larger images radiating out are also raised... It literally looks like the date was dropped in molten copper and it radiated out in ripples... Thanks for the response...
I guess someone could have hit it with a plasma torch, but then it should show more heat damage, and the outline of Lincolns profile is too precise for such a case. No way to really know, just took the most likely to me
You can't ignore the possibility that someone was trying to alter the "0" to make it a "6" and pawn it off as the '56 D/D. Chris
Yeah, an intentional attempt to alter occurred to me, but why go through the bother for a 1956-d/d and also, it wasn't a very good attempt if they also altered the entire front profile of abe's portrait too... it has that same effect... The reverse has some similar effect on the upper portion as well...
This is what is known as Die Deterioration Doubling. When the die begins to wear after a long life of striking coins, the elements often get a ghostlike shadow around them. It can have several different looks, one of them being similar to the coin you post.
It doesn't surprise me what some people will do for $25. I'm guessing that it was just a botched attempt, and the lowlife who tried to perpetrate the hoax decided to just discard the coin. Chris
This coin appears to have been altered outside the Mint. How about a photo of the entire obverse and reverse face?
Thanks for all the responses... Coin has been sent to ABE... (see above)... Once he has in hand, I am sure he will come back in with better photos and an updated opinion.... B
