Still looking for my first RPM. Living in Canada limits the amount of US cents I get to search. I was wondering if this is possibly a RPM. Still learning the RPM process. Its my understanding that pre 1990...the MM was put on the coin by hand. If this is true I would suspect that MDD is impossible for the MM. Please correct me if I'm incorrect. I'm used to it by now. I see it as...how can I learn if I dont ask the questions. I check coppercoins and did see a RPM close to this. Sorry if the pics are below average. Need new batteries for my loupe. Let me know what you think. Thank you in advance. All opinions are appreciated. []
Often many make the mistake over the statement that the mint mark was applied by hand, thinking that it meant that the mm was individually put on each coin. It really means, is that instead, the mm is applied individually to each working die, which then struck many thousand of coins with the same normal mm or if misapplied, same RPM. Now, the mm is on the master, so all dies made from it should be the same. Jim
Thank you for clarification on that. I was wondering...with the quantity of coins produced for the year..how the heck they would apply all those MM on the coins. LOL! OK...now that I feel silly for thinking the way I did. Would this MM be considered MD. Now that I have a understanding of the correct meaning of "put on by hand" for the earlier dates...the doubling seems shelf like so I will say MD. Maybe I'll be wrong again and it is a RPM.
Hello Billyray. I did check coppercoins for any RPM's for this year. I think I had said that in original post...maybe not. :goofer: Sometimes I forget to put some info in. That is one of the reasons I have started leaning towards MD. Waiting to hear from some of the experts and see what they think. Have a great night/morning.
lol, you're right, I read Coppercoins as copper coins. The thing I noticed is that none had the doubling on the right side of the D, the curved part.
I saw that. I thought maybe it was a different stage of 1984D-1MM-004. That variety shows a strong vertical bar in the inside of the D. this die is a East...which mine is also. Just that mine has the doubling on the Inside of the D as well as on the east of the outside (curve). Still hoping that there is something to it. We'll see.
Since you're in Canada and have trouble getting U.S. Cents - Why not buy rolls off eBay? I have had alot of luck with them. Although I know they are not authentic " Unsearched" rolls, I still find alot of keepers. I bought a roll of B/U 1955 D's and half the roll was RPM's. I paid 17 dollars for it.
I agree that there is no match on Coppercoins.com, and it does look MD to me also. On Lincolns, RPMs seemed to peak in the early 60s ( 60-D, 61-D ) and then go down hill to the change to putting the mm on the master die.
