Any one else on this list waiting on their 2004 5-coin state quarter silver proof sets? I orderd two sets from the mint when they were first offered, and received them right away. Two weeks later I ordered two more sets, and they have been backordered since 4/26. Has the mint not anticipated demand for these silver sets? Jim
Honestly, it could be a few things.... 1. They may not have expected the demand for the sets. I know they are backordered for release soon. 2. The mint isn't altogether dumb, and they released clad proof for the quarters just recently. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that they would purposefully constrain the silver proof quarters to sell the clad....
The mint is under a lot of pressure these days. We have full-year and quarters-only sets in both clad and silver, new nickels, huge demand for rolls of state quarters, eagles in gold, silver, and platinum, Edison, Lewis & Clark, First Flight gold and silver in proof and unc. Then there are medals and specials. More coordination with the Post Office, printed currency, spoon makers and Native Americans manufacturing special pouches. Novice collectors pulling more coins (especially quarters) out of circulation. All of this leads to problems in production and distribution.
braincramp, That logic would apply to all other sets, but proof sets are only made at the SanFrancisco mint. Their schedule is not effected by the factors you listed. This is the first time in a while that the mint has offered so many different sets. Production times will vary for each. They tend to spread out orders to facilitate this.
