What do you all think of this? The coin is silver (one ounce) and contains an insert of red Amber. It's a 2010 coin with a maximum mintage of 10,000 and a face value of $1. One of the more interesting modern coins i've seen. It's from the Island Nation of Niue (which is independent but has close ties to New Zealand) One side is modeled after an ancient coin which comes from Stare Hradisko. Below is the insert of genuine amber and below that the "Stare Hradisko" inscription. The other side shows an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II to the left. To the right is the image of a horse and cart, the sort used to transport amber from the Baltic regions back to Rome. Above is the image of a Centurion and a map of the Baltic area where the amber was mined. In the bottom portion is the year of issue, face value and country of issue.
Nice coin. They are getting strange with the commemorative coins lately. Like the one shaped like a guitar or the Tutankhamun triangle one with sand from the entrance to the tomb on it.
Nice idea, but they basically "borrowed" it from Poland which, contrary to Niue, is actually on the Amber Route. This is the Polish piece issued in 2001: Image: Polish central bank - Larger images (of both sides) are here: http://www.nbp.pl/banknoty_i_monety...01/2001_02___szlak_bursztynowy_20zl_awers.jpg http://www.nbp.pl/banknoty_i_monety...1/2001_02___szlak_bursztynowy_20zl_rewers.jpg Christian
The "coin" "from" Niue was actually produced by the Polish Mint. Could not find the link right away, but here it is: http://www.mennica.com.pl/en/products-and-services/mint-products/other-issuers.html Click on "Stare Hradisko 5 Dollars" and/or "Stare Hradisko 1 Dollar" to get more info about the issues. Hey thanks for that info! so it's a polish coin? or it's produced in poland for naiu? confusing to say the least
Both coins were produced by the Polish Mint. But the 2001 piece was made for and issued by Poland, while the 2010 piece was made for Niue. Guess the locals in Niue will hardly ever get to see one but the design sure is nice. Christian
