Hey all just joined up, I was recently left a chest full of coins, probably over a hundred pounds worth from my father and grandfather combined. As time goes on I would like to share some photos of some of the coins that stand out. Here are two so far that I'm going to send out to have graded, 2 Morgans, 1890-O and 1880. I have dozens of Morgans, hundreds of Eisenhowers and Bicentennials, and on and on. I also have a lot of international money as they were both in the wars, as well as US paper money silver certificates and Int'l paper money too. I have an Austrian coin that I can't find the value of, an 1869 franc ios idg imperator. I recently bought the red book and I have some general knowledge, not an expert nor will I ever be. Appreciate any feedback, thanks!
Welcome to the neighborhood! I don't want to sound discouraging, but if the images of the Morgans are photos rather than scans, both coins appear to have been improperly cleaned or dipped a few too many times. Neither coin appears to have any luster at all, and as such, would only receive a "Details" or "Genuine" grade. Since neither is a key date or semi-key date, they would only be worth melt value under those conditions. Even if they were to grade, the 1880 would probably have to grade MS65 and the 1890-O would probably have to grade MS64 to make it worthwhile. Chris
First, welcome to the forum. save your money, they will NOT get the high grades that you would need to get to be worth slabbing.
Welcome Sharp and thanks for sharing your coins. I love the old Morgan Dollars and those are two nice coins you have. I would have to agree tho that slabbing them would'nt be worth the fee and time due to there condition. The Morgan is a rare oldie that was stored in banks everywhere in the good ole days so they can be found today in Mint condition for the majority thus lowering the price substantially for worn Morgans. I love them worn or not tho as they are a great way to own silver so hang on to them. We would love to see your other coins aswell. O yea check out there mint marks to see if ya have any minted in Carson City as they will have CC on them below the tail feathers. Welcome again to CT.
SharpeyeNJ, I like them both. Even problem coins can wind up being worthwhile based on the variety each one is. You have a lot of sorting to do, time to go to a local coin shop and pick up some holders to help you to organize your treasure. And dont clean any of em. Welcome. Steve
Howdy and welcome! Those Morgans are nice looking, but it has already been said that these have been dipped/cleaned before. The pictures do a good job of hiding that though. As for grading, yeah, just save your money. The 1880 looks remarkably clean, but the photos, IMO, are a bit deceiving. The 1890-O, which I believe is notorious for having a weak strike (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) looks like it could be an AU coin. I can't tell the weak strike from wear from the pictures, I feel that your pictures hide quite a bit, and I can't tell what luster, if any is left.
I will post better pics tomorrow that I recently took that shows the coins a lot better. Can't do it now from my phone.
