True to some extent... but kind of harsh. Frankly, what if someone is buying a house, and they find the house of their dreams. Location, layout, etc suit them to a tee. And, it also suits another couple to a tee. House is worth $200,000 but they bid it up to $300,000. they can afford it, and it is exactly what they want. Was it worth it? To an outsider who has different needs, no. To them, yes. This coin is the same thing. I would not pay it, but I have bought others for over market because I wanted them. Obviously several people wanted this coin. Now, because it was not graded, likely mistakes were made and they desired it as an inexpensive MS65+ We can argue that it is AU58... but what if PCI or ANACS was to encapsulate it as an MS65 (or any other second tier but mostly reputable firm)? We may all disagree, but such is the world of TPG's, and now the buyer is brilliant, not stupid. So, he bought it for a lot of money, but wanted that great looking coin. Hobbies don't have to be rational. People buy silly little toys for thousands of dollars... old movie tickets, and other junk, and price is always set by the amount someone else values it. So, free market economies work the way they are intended. The buyer was not ignorant that is was likely not an MS65+ coin, but made a choice to still want it badly. He's not going to crash the market, and if he sells it, then he is a bad business person... as paying that to resell would not be a wise buy. Otherwise, he's just a happy collector!
Richard True...true. I guess I can speak my mind too well....It might be worth it but the question comes back....even if he looked and looked for one and this one poped out...there is hardly a reason to go that much over the true value. Wear is wear...I can see PCI grading it MS but any of the others should catch on to the wear.....I also think the photo was darkend for a reason...cleaning...I can't tell...but for some reason. If it ever gets the MS65 grade from a good grading Co., I, and many others are going to be shocked.... Speedy
I'd be shocked too! But you gotta admit, its a fine looking coin! I grab it for $220 or so on a buy it now most likely in a second. Money is relative... if I had a few hundred thousand to spend, and saw this and wanted it, $600 may just not matter much... its all a matter of perspective, perhaps! Speak your mind, that's what we are here for. I just wanted to support someone who apperantly chose to pay over marke with his eyes wide open to the potentiality that the coin is a $200 coin. His call. As to cleaning, I don't see the signs, and think it would show up on the feathers more, and they look pristine. never know though
IMHO, that is a cleaned, well struck FEC. It may even be a forgery, athought I don't think there are lots of counterfits of this date. In any event, I wouldn't touch it with a 10' pole...Mike
It does have the kind of detail you see in reproductions, and there are repro's on the market... but they do have the word copy on the reverse, which is hard to hide. Seller seems legit...
That's only true since 1975, when the 1973 US Federal Hobby Protection Act went into effect. (And, unfortunately, not all replica producers comply.)
I don't get impressed by flying eagles too often but to me they is a WOW coin. I would probably rather have it than the MS-65 piece posted on this thread. I have seen proofs that don't have that much detail. As for people claiming that they see wear on the coin, who knows maybe there is but you won't know until you see it in person. There is no way you can judge from the photos whether it is Unc or not. (Personally I do not believe you can tell for sure if ANY coin is Unc or not from a photo.) The spot of "wear" could be slightly out of focus, a toning change, or pixelation of the image.
And I'll be the first to say I could be wrong....but wear is wear...and when it shows in a photo it will show in real life.... Speedy
Then that would make two of US, because I believe I would have taken a flyer on this one for that price. In my oppinion, you did 'GOOD'. Nor can I, so don't sweat it any longer. Just had the cataracts removed and the Dr. said I could see as good as a 20 year old. And IF it don't bring an equal or greater price, so what? You got the coin you wanted and that is what matters the most. Now get it graded by someone like NGC and watch it come back as MS66 (I hope). :thumb:
Well, I think your not right about this. I've sued before through the AG because of a misrepresentation with a Comic that was refurbushed and not stated as such. And then the postal service got involved for mail fraud. It will depend on the state and the AG's office, but all states have fraud laws. Ruben
First, I don't care if the coin is an MS 65 since I've seen MS 65's that are not as nice as this coin. But in terms of the wear, show me the detail which is rubbed out? I've looked side by side with the image that GD made pointing out the worn spots with a MS 68 coin and the image on coin facts, and I don't see and detail lost. Maybe a slight detail lost on the tail side of the coin. And consider this, the Flying Eagles were notoriously bad strikes. This is an excellent strike. And nobody can show me yet a coin of eqaul price with better detail. The only questions I have at this point is was the auction rigged and is the coin as advertised. Ruben
Ruben - there's certainly no denying that THAT is a killer coin. I certainly agree it is one of the best struck examples I've seen. Even so, I still believe my opinion about it is correct. And I most definitely could be wrong. But that doesn't really matter - all that matters is that YOU are happy with the coin. When you get it - if you are - I'll be tickled to death for ya
Your ability to grade coins through photo's have proven to be simply astonishing, and I have complete faith that when I have the coin slabbed, it will come back just as you predicted. But I'm just saying that I don't see it. Its driving me crazy, but I don't see the wear. In any event, if we spin back the clock you'll recall me complaining about the MS and AU grading guildlines before. IMO, if a coin is truly exceptional in its detail and suffers a little wear, it should get a higher grade than an MS coin with a lot of ugly bag marks and a lousy strike. IMO, we've taken a qualitative description of a coin (that it is MS or not) and incorrectly made it a quantified description. Most MS 60 coins I've seen are UUUUGLLY. Ruben
Cleaning has me worried. In terms of the market though, show me a comprable coin with this much detail and its sale price? The market is the market, not a line in the text. I've looked IN THE MARKET for a similar coin and could not find one, Sure, there are AU 58s but they do not look like this one, or at least as it apears in the photo. Ruben
Hey Ruben, the only important thing is that you are happy! Like I said, I'd love to have that one in my collection! Update us when you get it.
Thats the trick. I'll be happy if what I get is what apears in the photo. I'm going to be real unhappy if it is cleaned Ruben
Well I'm thinking of here in KY...you wouldn't have a leg.... Be have wear it doesn't have to take away much detail...it can be just a little....but its still wear.... I say AMEN to that...... Ah....don't bet on that....it might take a year but a collector will hold out and wait and wait for years untill he finds that ONE coin....sometimes its not easy...but I would say there are some out there....how long have you been looking?? I must say...as long as you are happy....thats great...and I'm sure not going to tell you now that the auction is over that you got had...but if you ever send that away to get graded....I want to know what it comes back as??!!!! Speedy
In Kentuky someone can make a blatently false representation of a sale item and not be held responsible? I think you probably have more protection than that. Ah, well I over stated that a little. I ment that nobody could show me an equivelent coin at the moment for a similar price, or more specifically, while the auction was happening and that's the market. Ruben
