I got a call from a dealer wanting to sell me 14 half ounce platinum kola coins at $1000 each. He claims only 350 were minted worldwide? Is that a joke?

    joke?

it could if they produced a jillion of them. I wonder what the float is on those. The market is probably even thinner on non us coins?

standard67, no offense meant to you at all...

I would wait and not buy any more expensive coins until you learn more about numismatics.

And no, I don't think that's a good deal. You can get one ounce Platinum American Eagles for just about that price.

    1 Platinum (oz.) = 1,001.47 US Dollar (DEC. 8TH 2005)

So , If A 1000 $ Were Asked For 1/2 Oz, The Asked Price Is Slightly More Than A Double Of The Coins Weight. Even If The Mintage Is Only 350 , It Seems Exagerated.

After seeing the website posted by gxseries, it does seem that the mintage of Platinum Proof Coins is quite low. However, down towards the bottom of that page, uncirculated coin mintage is many times higher. Which was the dealer offering you Standard67? If they were the proofs, I will go back on what I said a bit and say that that is not quite as bad of a deal as I originally thought. However, I don't think it's a good deal for the uncirculated coins.

    Platinum Coins

In 2000-2004 there were only 350 Platinum coins 1/2 oz minted issue price was $1250 dollars Australian for 2004; 1008 for the 2003& 2002; $912 for the 2001;788.38 for the 2000

In 1999 there were 750 sets issued at $595 Australian dollars

in earlier years such as 1993 there were 1500 sets minted

    What year were you offered???

That's a good question, shows you how green i am! It was one of those "you have to buy these now, I only have ___ sets left" deals, so I passed.

They're nice looking coins. I wonder how much you're actually paying for all of the presentation case and all that.
