Session I of the ANA Summer Seminar begins Saturday June 26 and Session II begins Saturday July 3. It is probably THE BEST numismatic education experience to be found and is held every summer on the campus of Colorado College near the ANA headquarters in Colorado Springs. This year I will be taking: Session I Detection of Counterfeit and Altered Coins - Yeah, I know. I took this course several years ago and last year I taught a mini-seminar on introduction to counterfeit detection. But I figured I could use a refresher AND this course is being taught by different instructors - Brian Silliman (NGC grader and writer of the Counterfeit Detection column in The Numismatist) and Skip Fazzari (expert numismatist for ICG). I think the combination of a different perspective and a refresher will help hone my counterfeit detection skills. Advanced Numismatic Negotiating (mini-seminar) This should be a great learning opportunity from two very, very knowledgeable collectors - Barry Stuppler (past president of ANA and coin dealer) and Ron Sirna (ANA general counsel and VERY advanced collector). Session II The Modern Minting Process: Errors and Varieties What can I say? This course is being taught by the guy that wrote the book (on error coins as well as numerous attribution guides) - James Wiles. Minting Mayhem: Creating Errors (mini-seminar) While taking a course on how error coins are made why not make a few? George Culhaj (editor of Standard Catalog of World Coins and Standard Catalog of World Paper Money) and Joe Paonessa (America's Greatest Left-Handed Hobo Nickel Carver) return with their coin press which is used by students to create error coins. This should be fun. So who else will be there?
I'll be there for Session I enrolled for the 5 day Grading Course. It's something I've always wanted to do and finally committed to the opportunity. I look forward to seeing you there. After returning I hope to let CT folks know about my experience. Hobo, check your pm's I've got a few local questions.
I was going to do the youth scholarship, as I had written an essay last year but never sent it in, and this year just too many problems with my knee and Driver's Ed. Maybe next year.
I'll be there for session I. Hobo, I assume you will be at the Saturday luncheon at the dorms, see you there. A YN from one of my local coin clubs got a scholarship, he will also be there.
Session 1 I will be there on the YN scholarship during session 1. College dorms ought to be interesting with their...prison like comfort. lol. Any suggestions? Im taking 2 two day classes. one on money of the world (class 1) and one on early US commemoratives (class 8) Tyler
Tyler, Are you the YN I was reading about in Coin World - the one who won a scholorship to Summer Seminar from PNG? We should get together while you are in town. I will at both sessions. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you my cell number.
Oh no. I just applied for the one through the ANA. I had met Dr. Walt Ostromecki (hes a member of one of the coin clubs im in) and he encouraged me to sign up and give it a shot. What say you? anything I might need to bring to the dorms?
