Just curious if anyone on here has ever gotten one. I've been asking for years at banks and never gotten lucky. I have gotten some old 100's. I know they are legal tender but I have heard that there is a policy that the Fed wants them removed from circulation.
It's my understanding that if any bill larger than a $100 gets into the banking system, it is "redeemed" by the Fed for destruction. Chris
A friend of mine works for Brinks... last year he found 3 $1,000's and 4 $500's... they were all pretty ratty.... but people are still turning them in.
The coin shop in my town has a couple 500s and thousands in his showcase. I never asked, but what do you dealers usually sell them for? I was watching an old episode of "Let's Make a Deal" with Monty Hall on the Game Show Network not too long ago. He offered the contestant what's behind the curtain or a nice crisp $1,000 bill.
Here in Canada, it's been years since I've gotten a $1000 bill in payment for something. Back in the '80's and '90's they were a lot more common. The only ones I've been offered lately have been from collectors. It's too much money for me to tie up in one bill unless it has an interesting serial number or an error. Even then, it would have to be pretty spectacular.
I pulled one it's an Sf $500. It was in the mutilated pile. Heavily damaged lots of markings etc. Had a rip and one huge tear. But I took it anyways. I'll scan it and post it if requested. I have another $500 San Francisco from my dad. He got back in 1983 while gambling. Lol. It's in very fine grade. Both are 1928 series.
A friend of mine works at a bank, and apparently a few years ago a customer brought in a $1000 bill in pretty good shape (not sure how the customer got it). The bank gave the guy ten $100 in exchange, and then one of the emplyees ended up taking it home for face value.
They're still out there. My mother-in-law was working at a retirement community part-time a few years ago and had some children of one of the residents come in and pay for her continued stay. Included in the bills was one $500 and one $1,000. Of course this was before I started collecting so I wasn't told about them. The workers passed it around before it eventually went in the deposit to the bank. I've still been looking but have only seen them in dealer's shops.
they are few and far between. one of my co-workers has a $500 she had gotten from a customer. about a year ago someone came in with a $1000 and was notified it was worth a lot more and they kept it so sell somewhere instead of depositing it.
I have seen one at a local sandwich shop of all places. I look behind the counter and in a nice little glass case a $1000 dollar bill. From what I have heard is that the 10,000 bills and up were for the government transactions.
