With coins, cameo has a slightly different definition: cameo is defined as a 'frosted' surface on a proof or prooflike coin. A cameo surface appears almost like it is 'roughened' and a coin can be cameo with either a strong strike or a weak strike. This cent is a strong strike, but not cameo (no frosty appearance). Perhaps this will help. attached is a picture of a prooflike coin showing some cameo. Notice how it almost glows and appears frosted, while the rest is typically glossy?
Did I miss it...was the word coin used in any of that?? Looking at a lighter photo (Thanks for the lighting) I think there is something about the change in the funny color...there is a green and then a brown and then a darker brown/green... I wouldn't want to bet on this being uncleaned...but I also think that and NGC and PCGS would slab it because of the fact that its an older coin and not many of them are uncleaned. That being said...I still don't see the proof look or he CAMEO...many times when wear is on a coin it shows up as ligher...so where the eagels wings look "white" that may be a sign of wear... Speedy
What? So no frost, no camero? What of those Deep Cameo proof 70's the graders are churning out? Ruben
You don't understand You can have a proof and NOT a CAMEO--a proof has looks...it is struck twice whereas a business strike is struck once. but today CAMEO is almost a thing...you don't see many coins from the 80's to date without cameo...now before that it was kindof rare to get a CAMEO coin...and DCAMEO is even rarer...you see grading didn't even use the word CAMEO untill the early 80's if I remember right. A CAMEO is the black and white look a coin has...like the Franklin below...I hope this helps...as you can see the FE Cent doesn't show this kind of CAMEO...and it wouldn't...but there would still be a look to the coin that is unlike any other look. Speedy
Same place it always appears first - the high points. I doubled the size of the pics and brightened them a bit. I think the coin is an AU58.
Yes, black and white is another excellent way to describe it! I think that there is a lot of confusion over proof and cameo as two different things. Also, the low tier TPG's do call all sorts of interesting things cameo that would never pass the test for a real grader. I love that frankie by the way... hard to get solid cameo in those... So, we have high relief or deep strike as one thing We have cameo as a different thing, and of course proof. So, you can high a high relief deep cameo proof... or a poorly struck no cameo proof no wonder it takes a long time to learn this hobby! Or the above cent, which is strongly struck, not a proof, and not a cameo... and yes, it is showing a touch of wear. Really nice coin, though, for the right price. Hard to find great AU's like that for fair money!
I love the detail of this coin though. I've seen MS state slabs without nearly this level of detail. Ruben
See, this is a PSCG Slabbed MS 65 - Hot Coin, and the same parts of the coin can be pointed at and this one doesn't have nearly the detail in the sensitive breast area (no sex jokes). Ruben
I can only speak for what I'd pay, not what is a good investment... but, as a lover of flying eagle cents... I might pay a bit over two hundred for an AU with that kind of strike. Maybe as much as $250. I think that actual 'retail' is around this range, and gray sheet is gonna be 30% or more less than that, I'd imagine. Again, I buy based on how I value a coin and want it, however, not based on market. Just glanced at the auction, and see it is at almost $600... now I would not pay that, but again, something is worth what you are willing to pay, so more power to the buyer if this coin has that much attraction to them. It is a sweet looking cent! I just hope no one is buying it hoping to resell or as an investment (perhaps hoping it is a high grade MS). It really does look to be AU55 or AU58 to me.
You do have a good point there. I have seen few of these this well struck, and as a collectors coin, it would be a tremendous speciment to own. Good luck with it, though I hope the price does not go up any further!
I'm having a funny feeling about this auction. It seems the price just keeps going to one step below my maximum bid. Has anyone seen such a scam on ebay before? Ruben
I know I must look like an idiot for buying this coin at this price, but here is the thing. I've been hunting for 3 months for a Flying Eagle of this quality which I could afford, and I haven't seen not one. So the grey sheet might say that as a AU58 this is a $170 coin, but show a coin of equavilant detail on the market anywhere, and I'll buy it. I've purchased 8 Flying Eagles in the last month and I'm not happy with any of them. Coins with detail compared to this coin seem to be in the 2K range of pricing. We've been discussing this for about a week and I've looked at a hundred plus coins, and not one, regardless of grade, comes near this in eye apeal and detail, except for some $2000 MS67+ slabs and proofs. Even with the photos being pointed out, I can't see any wear on these photos. If this coin is as detailed as the photo, and isn't cleaned, I'm going to be pretty happy with it. And I think that if it looks that good, that it will always attract a good bid. If it is NOT, I'm going to be talking to the Attorny General's office. Ruben
Hey, I'm a collector, and coins are worth what I am willing to pay! You get the same right! Value is an internal thing, unless you are a dealer, then it is market based. I love the coin. I've spent well over market for coins I want, many times. that is the best looking FE I've ever seen (outside of some proofs) and it will be a great one to own!
You won't have a leg to stand on there...you bid....it was all your doing... But as a collector you ahve to pay what you think the value is worth...but this is plain black and white...its not worth it. This is what makes the market go up...people bidding on overgraded coins for more than they are worth...then when they sell at a lost......the market will fall. Speedy
