been gone for a long time and now I'm back I got a 2007 no edge lettering washington presidential dollar ngc ms66 and I'm wondering what people's opinions are on it. I did see in the past them selling on e-bay for $185-$225 now the highest price I see is $130 is there a reason for the dip or is it just the popularity of them has diminished? also you guys think they will go back up in price or would I just be better off selling now before they drop more? I would like to get some ase'sbut in my perfect kind of world I would like to hold it then it goes up in price and silver drops too and I get alot more idk..sounds like a great idea to me..I could handle silver dipping even though it probably never will drop to $10/oz ever again...
In my opinion, the value of everything is part intrinsic value and part rarity. So, all Presidential Dollars are intrinsically worth $1, but there is a premium on those that are rarer than the average coin. As the market learns exactly how rare an item is, then the prices will stabilize. Early on, they were believed to be very rare; they are rare, but not as much as first believed, so prices have adjusted accordingly.
I think all of the missing edge dollars have been hit pretty hard. I like these and have a few of them. Overally the Washingtons are fairly common and are most exposed to such changes in the marked in my opinion. I also have a Jefferson Missing Edge Lettering and a Madison (satin finish) Missing Edge Lettering and both of those are much much rarer than the Washington. Even then, the value of those seems to have gone down quite a bit and quite quickly. Perhaps demand for these has just gone down. Maybe people are just losing interest in the series overall?
rarely do modern recent errors go up over the short run, once there is an article out or some publicity they go through the roof, then more and more come out and the prices go down. Look at what happened with the double thumb lincolns last year, I found rolls of them and made good money on ebay on them, I sold everyone I could for whatever I could get because I knew the steam would run out when more hit, now you can't hardly give them away.
This trend is quite common where new finds are concerned. When the shark feeding frenzy ends, the little gulls swoop in to pick up the scraps. Chris
Oh yeah. These have really suffered which is unfortunate. The Washington MEL's have very high numbers but the Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Quincy Adams and Polk coins have much, much lower availability numbers. Why those other six coins would suffer is a bit confusing. Say wait one minute! Despite the US Mint's attempts, are these MEL coins becoming a "common" error? Maybe thats the problem? Folks just don't care anymore.
Maybe it is because some collectors just don't like the crappy edge lettering in the first place and wish they would return to putting everything on the obverse and reverse. It would be one thing if the edge lettering was raised, but the way it is now looks really second-rate. Chris
