I love the colors on this one but as you will see in the pics I just cant keep her. She's in NGC 55 plastic and I think thats a huge mistake. I would love this coin in EF plastic for EF money but I paid AU money and I just cant stand to look at her!!! Thoughts?

SHe looks evil and wicked! Ive had enough women like that in my life already.
Here is the one I am getting instead. Not a toner but oh well. The semi proof like is a damn decent compromise IMO.

40 views and no opinions? Anyone at least agree with me that its worth a return?

I dont blame you on it. If your not happy then your not happy. Your the one that has to look at it. We all buy a coin and sometimes we end up regretting it later on.

    BNB ring any bells? lol.

Just kinda airing it out. I think the scratch and the rim dings ruin the coin. They did not show in the sellers pics. The face I would have accepted since it is most likely due to a very late die state, but when you conisder the other things it just wraps the whole coin in a bag and smacks it with the ugly stick. Too bad because color seems hard to come buy on these. The replacement though I agree is very nice. Seems very PQ for a 58. Only the one bag mark on the ribs and seemingly minimum rub. I was hoping to stumble into at least 1 expert in this series, but I guess these arent that popular?

I agree the coin belongs in EF plastic and maybe in that dark room at NGC where the graders graded this coin, they just saw this toning and thought it deserved a bump. The didn't pay enough attention to the rim or the head.
I'd return this coin if ya' paid AU money for it, and ya' did.

I think the true grade on this one got lost somewhere between the techno music blasting and the strobelights going in the grading room. (That's how I picture the grading rooms anyway)

I picture them dancing to the Safety Dance in between grading each coin. :D

    LOL! Very funny.

I agree with you for your reasons. The coin has marks which you don't like and a grade that doesn't fit. Don't accept something that will continue to bug you. Besides you have really good taste in picking coins from what I've seen posted recently so you are bound to find another nicer coin that fulfills your satisfaction of eye appeal and grade. :smile

I think she looks like she is wearing the mask from the phantom of the opera to me.

I guess NGC doesn't award that designation anymore. :D

Thanks for the compliment. I posted her replacement a few posts below the OP. I think that even though shes got no pretty colors, she has tremendous eye appeal and is a coin leap and bounds above the original one in quality. I even looked at about a dozen coins in MS-62-64 and kept coming back to this au58 as the nicest one of them all.(With the exception of an unreal ms-64 proof like in pcgs plastic that went for like 1500$ that i posted inthe mexican proof like thread).

I was more a fan of the tone on the toner, but as you pointed out it's too bad for the marks and such. As for the replacement coin, it's a whole different realm there, so clean and white. I totally understand where you are coming from with the allure of AU58. I see coins often that have more character and honest reasoning for the grade in AU and would prefer living with those to low MS grades that are questionable. Again, really nice choices and thanks for sharing the new piece.

I think there is a lot of value in the AU 58 grade as you say because an MS 67 coin with rub is suddenly an AU 58. Anything from ms 65 - to ms 67 with rub can end up at the 58 level. Technically a 63 and a 64 could be a 58 as well but the difference between an AU 58(64) and an AU 58(66) could be night and day.

The replacement is a monster. I dont think I can take better pics than the seller's I already posted but it is as glorious as it looks in those. I dont see any rub, im not sure what kept it at a 58. There is a little bit of weak striking on the right wing which keeps the top 2 feathers from splitting and the letters on the reverse get weak on one side towards the rim but there is no rub whatsoever and add the semi prooflike fields to boot. So glad I made the decision to return the other one and get this :D
