    Hope this helps

I've owned several of the 3 1/2 legged buffalo nickels over the years, and a couple of the 2 feather coins. What I've read about them is that sometimes the dies come in contact with each other without a coin between them- When this happens usually the dies imprint on each other resulting in die clashes. The coins and dies are inspected every so often for defects or problems, and if any substantial dieclashes, diebreaks, or cuds, etc. are found - mint employees either remove the die or dies to polish off imperfections, or replace the dies with new ones. The feather on your coin was most likely polished off the obverse die - due to a mint employee trying to remove die clashes. This is also how the famous 1937 D 3 legger came to be.:smile
