Today my mother-in-law gave me what appears to be a 1908 double eagle, in absolutely amazing condition. She says it was given to her when she was young. It's in a little blue box, and inside it's sits on top of a pyramid like slope. The coin itself is about the size of my pinky finger nail. On the side of the pyramid it says 24kt. gold. Is this possible? Isn't the double eagle much bigger?

This isn't a coin...I would say more of a token plated in a little layer of gold...a photo would be great!

a realdouble eagle has a diameter of 34 mm, They are about ( estimating)the size of half dollar,so i'm pretty sure it's a tribute token not an real U.S. coin

by the way welcome to coin talk!

Welcome to the forum Will. I have seen those at flea markets for $20.00 each. They are tokens.

I wouldn't call them a token since they are not good for any kind of exchange value. more like a medalette. They were sold for $20 by a private company and are actually 24Kt gold. They are not plated but so thin and light weight that they only had about $15 dollars worth of gold in them.

So is there anywhere were it would be possible to determine it's worth, or is it just worth the gold that's used to make it?

The gold isn't worth anything...its sooo thin that there isn't much....the value is....what someone is willing to pay.

    Read more carefully Speedy ;)

Yes - it is worth the gold content, that's all.

Isn't that the kind of gold its plated with....if it is the gold content would be soo small there wouldn't be much value...If I was looking for one like that I would be paying more for it than gold content I hope....

I guess to me it would be worth more for the history and sentimental/family value attached to it rather than the small amount of gold it may contain??
sounds like a nice little piece to hand down from generation to generation??

This is what I was referring to -

It is not plated - it is solid 24k gold.
