EF-AU and it doesn't looked dipped or cleaned from your photo. but you may want an expert to look at the date.the bottom lop of the 8 is smaller than the top.1918/7-S ?????anything is possible?????
Really ? Then how do you explain all those little black dots all over the coin and all of the darkness in the recesses ? That coin has absolutely been dipped.
the coin is silver and it reacts to different changes in climate. Humidity has been known to cause little black spots. Also the previous owner could have been a real bad spitter when he talked and all those little spot are where his spit landed. In the coin world we refer to those spots as Carbon spots. Carbon spots cannot be removed and usually become larger when you try to remove them.
I always thought those types of spots came from a dip that did not get neutralized properly. I'm not sure I'm right. I think it was cleaned at some point. The images are nice but I'm not sure we are seeing the real color of the coin. I really like the coin. One of my favorite coin types.
quite honestly you might be right, I am not saying the spots cannot come from dipping without removing all the dip solution. I am just stated the other possible ways the coin developed the spots. If it was toned you could also use heating the coin in the oven as a possible reason. Also this series ranks second to mercury dimes in my opinion. The coin has so much going on, I love it
I dont remember saying it wasnt dipped. there is a chance it has been dipped but you cannot look at a coin and say. this thing has been dipped because theres black spots on it. The coins not BU so theres a chance it is crud that got into the crevices. Silver is much more porous than copper and holds more crud than other mettals
If you consider that as evidence of a dip then I would have to disagree with you strongly. Crud can slide across surfaces and then accumulate at the edges of raised design elements, which is exactly the affect we are seeing in that image. Has the coin been dipped? Maybe, but I think I detect a skin on it and would place my money on it having not been dipped. Do I think your arrow is evidence of a dip. Not a chance.
You can disagree all you want but that is from dipping. In fact, all the areas along the cameo areas are darkened in a TYPICAL pattern for this coin type. This coin was absolutely dipped and Doug says that it was harshly so, which frankly, is good enough for me. That pocketing on the obverse is likely what he is talking about. I'm really done discussing that at this point. The Internet is famous for prattle about factual information, insisting the sky is Green, and not blue. I'm not interested today. If you choose to believe that it wasn't dipped, I have a few Peace Dollars I'd like to sell you. Ruben
It's a simple case of us agreeing to disagree. I'm not trying to convince you or Doug or anyone else regarding the ultimate history of the coin. I know Doug has substantial experience and knowledge and I know I have that, too, yet we disagree based upon these images. That's okay, it happens from time to time. Your attitude, however, stinks and I can easily see why you reference an ex-wife based upon your contributions in the quoted post.
Two guys whose opinions I value and respect are "going at it". Knock it off gentlemen. This kind of non-sense is beneath you both....
