I have a 1909 Iraqi coin of some kind that I'm not sure what is... It's silver looking with wheat stalks around the bottom.. I'm not sure if that's descriptive enough and if it's not let me know and I'll try to scan and post pictures of it... thank you
Posting pictures or a scan is the fastest way for people to help give advice. Can't wait to see the picture.
1909 Iraqi or Middle Eastern coin This 1909 coin was attained in Iraq by a family member, I am just wondering of its worth. I have heard tell that Sadaam had all of the coins pre- his era destroyed and it made this coin rare? I'm curious as to what it is and what it is worth!
I think the dating on the piece is 1959-1378, all in Arabic script - the character you are reading as an "0" is actually a "5". Islamic year 1378 extended from July 18, 1958 to July 6, 1959, on the western calendar. That might be a 250 fils denomination in the center of the dated side, but it would take far better eyes than mine to make it out for sure in the small picture, and I'm sure no one can read it in the out-of-focus larger pic. There are no 20th Century Iraqi coins shown in the Standard Catalog of World Coins with the sunburst(?) design pictured. What are the size and apparent metallic content? Can you post in-focus scans or photos?
It's really only necessary to post a single thread for a single question. I won't repeat the partial answer I posted in your other thread.
Ooops! I missed it on the first run-through, but there it is - KM#123, 50 fils, 5g of .500 silver, a one-year issue dated 1959-1378. The 23mm coin had a mintage of 24-million, and is valued at $1.25 to $5, depending on condition, in the 2008 35th Edition. With an actual silver weight of .0803 oz., the bullion value at market close today was ~$1.46. Based on what I see in the latest picture, it would probably grade somewhere in the XF range, so retail value is perhaps $1.50-2.50. Here's a clearer picture, courtesy of Numismaster.com:
