I think they are great to collect and it's a shame I can't get them in change. A friend of mine has a laundromat and gets every denomination of coin you can imagine but never a large cent. They just don't fit into machines nowadays.

Can't get much older than that.... ;)
The oldest one I have (US) is 1802...the oldest (world) coin I have is 1792.
I also bought a 1794 Half Dollar once but didn't want to pay on it for the rest of my life!

I like large "NOT ONE CENT" pieces. While not too many years to choose from, there are hundreds of varieties.

Don't have any US large cents but do have quite a few British, Canadian, and Australian large cents. Neat looking coins. (Like how the Australian large cents had a kangaroo on the back.)

This on on my list, to get at least one US large cent.

They are pennies, there were 240 of them to the British/Australian/New Zealand/South African/Irish £1.

I think the Aussies are my favourites too, of course I have several hundred roos :eek:hya:

I absolutly LOVE them!!I had the 1821 in AU 5 years ago and could kick myself for letting go of it!!I have metal detected 5 over the years, one, the 1823 was MINT60! but corroded somewhat, I still have it and remember that cool day!.

Yep, the pre-decimal stuff are technically not "cents" in the sense of being 1/100 a dollar (or pound). But I loosely classify them as "large cents" in the sense of being larger than the current standard penny in those countries. Large Canadian cents were 1/100 of a Canadian dollar though (at least the 1898 one I have).

When did Australia and New Zealand switch to the dollar (Australian and New Zealand dollar, that is)?

British halfpennies saw some circulation in Canada as cents, also the threepence saw limited circulation as a five cent coin, being quite similar in size.

NZ and Aus switched over in 1966-1967.

My 7 year old daughter found a 1794 large cent coin today in the soil of a house plant. I am as confused as you are. Does anyone know anything about them? I have looked through hundreds of images of these coins and I cant find one that is exactly like this one.

Can you post a photo...since you say you can't find one like it maybe its a token.
Some people I think used to say that copper in the dirt helped the plant grow.

Beautiful large cents, guys, especially Leadfoot's and SuperDave's. I've got 3 large cents: 1827 in VG, 1847 in VF, and 1853 in G--nothing worth taking a picture of though. ;)

I'd like to get a few more, as they were one of the coins that really fascinated me when I was young.

And the thread lives. My newest and now oldest coin! The lousy scanner I have put some little whites spots in the scans(guess I oughta dust it). Still trying to figure out how to determine fair prices for some of these early puppies when there is such a discrepancy between grades.
