Last week I purchased a group of coins. Silver dollars, quarters, dimes. Amoung the lot of coins were 75 Indian head cents, 10 rolls of wheat cents a few odds and ends which I sold. I looked thru the indian head cents found no real big dollar items but notice I had a lot of dates mostly good or vg. Well I thought I already have a complete set of raw lincolns why not indians. I had no intrest in the copper cents, but the folks said they would take them to the bank and trun them in. So I purchased them for face value Long and short of it I'm now collecting indian head cents.
So, just to be clear, you purchased all the cents, Indian and Lincoln, for face value? You just said you purchased the copper cents for face, wanted to know if it was just the Lincolns or both. And the Indian Head Cent is am absolutely beautiful series, a wonderful one to collect. Don't know if I'd collect them raw, but hey whatever floats your boat, man. Congrats, can't wait to see you finish the set.
Yes all the Indian & Lincoln cents were bought for 1 cent each. Of the 10 rolls of Lincolns I only thru 1 which were mainly from the 40's & 50's. I'll look thru the other 9 some stormy day. There were 26 different dates from 1868 to 1909 of Indian
No, I'm going to check them out some stormy day. The folks I got them them from were going to take them to the bank.
You would be amazed at how many people do that. I've known many people that take coins to banks and they tell me there were some Wheat Cents in there but not worth thier time to sort them out and then what to do with them.
can you post pictures of them? in xf condition the '73 could easily be a $100 coin. and the '78 in xf condition could be an easy $180. in Good condition i have seen '73's sell for $14-$20 and the '78 for $20-$35. did you check the 1909 for the "S" mint mark, that is a $400+ plus coin. i have seen over a grand for ms ones.
The 2 coins from the seventy's are ag/g the 09 has no "s" but I'll go to the local coin show and look for one plus a 1877
Indian Head Cents is a great series to collect. You'll have fun for sure. If you want a real challenge, put together a set in VF or better. Good luck!
I will tell you that the Indian set is a great set to put together. I have a complete set and I believe that you might want to check your coins by the cherry picker guide.
don't forget to check for RPD's (Re-Punched Dates). These can also be valuable. The examples in the images are not Indian heads, but the same thing happened on this series. Something else to check for.
I too just started an IH collection but I only have two coins right now- a 1905 and a 1906 but I'm bidding on an unsearched roll of wheats and IH's on ebay so maybe I'll have some more soon.
I would say that you did pretty good on this one. The IHC should bring you at least $1/each and probably more for the two in the 70's. The copper cents are worth $0.025 in melt value with the wheats selling for $0.03-$0.05 at auctions. At the minimum you've tripled your money on them.
Those can be very disappointing. If you look thru some of the feedbacks on those rolls you'll find that you get one or two IH's and then the rest are very very common Lincolns. Of course that is only on the ones I looked at. What condition IH's are you looking for?
