I've never had a coin graded, does any one know the cost of grading a 1879s morgan that has pl qualities?

Tmoneyeagles hooked you up with the links, be prepared to spend around fifty dollars or so plus shipping. Is there a reason why I dont see the ANACS grading group mentioned a lot on this forum? Just curious if they have some bad rep. I hadnt heard about. I have a few of their slabs.

I think the reason why is because ANACS has proved to be a somewhat, inconsistent grading service. Sure they are all inconsistent, but a lot of ANACS coins are all over the charts, while NGC/PCGS coins seem to have better reputation due to the lower level of inconsistency versus ANACS, ICG, or any other grading company.

If somebody is confident in grading their own coins, and don't plan on reselling in the future, and expect to maybe not get what they paid for a coin, then ANACS or ICG might be your way to go. Many ANACS/ICG coins are graded the same way another TPG might grade them, but if the price is the same as PCGS/NGC coins, then you are already overpaying, because there is an extremely good chance you won't get your money back. When buying ANACS/ICG coins you have to buy them at a lower price, and sometimes that just can't be done.

Therefore, suggesting ANACS or ICG graded coins to a collector who doesn't understand all this, and doesn't know the market very well, wouldn't be smart to do.

If your submitting just that single coin it will cost 15-35 dollars shipped and insured. MY reccomendation is find a NGC certified dealer and take it to them and they'll take care of it for you.

Is this the 79S/78 Reverse Top 100? If it is the common-date 79S/79 Reverse, why would you want to submit it for grading? Unless it graded MS66, it really wouldn't be worth it. The 78 Reverse might not even be worth it unless it graded MS63.

Going with Chris's point, is there any chance you can post photos of your coin?
It wouldn't make much sense to pay upwards of $40 to get a coin graded if it isn't worth that much, or is worth very little over $40.
Is the coin really PL, is does it just have PL qualities (one side being PL and the other not)?

ANACS is not as consistent with older coins as PCGS or NGC.

There are quite a few members here who don't like ANACS.
I happen to be a collector who does use ANACS simply because they have a company rep at the coin shows I attend.
He takes your submissions and sends them to Colorado so You don't pay for shipping submissions. The other 2 companies do not have reps at the local shows I go to.

Thats nice of them. I have been sending them some morgans from time to time for authentication, no problems so far and I noticed none of the posts here @ CT mentions them.

Or become a member of ANA and submit it yourself to NGC. Of course I believe the minimum is 4 coins. :)

Oh yes. There are quite a few posts here about ANACS. Most members don't like them. A very few do use them though. For me it ends up being very easy and cheaper. I don't send in anything rare or worth huge money.
Mostly I am just trying out the service.
When I called customer service [3 times] regarding my previous submission I got a runaround and the phone answerer girls couldn't tell me anything.
So I e-mailed ANACS customer service and got a quick answer from the vice president, Paul DeFalise who fixed the problem.
So now I have a second batch of coins being graded. So far so good.
But I realize that the other 2 companies are "perceived" as better and can bring more $$$ at selling time.
It's mainly for the convienience, and the free shipping to the graders that I am trying ANACS.

    Victor,

When you use the term batch how many coins are we talking?

I think this is a good idea, it seems to me, and this perception comes from my limited experience, but just as there is a market bump for high demand, key coins, I think that there might also exist a customer bump, so high volume customers who submit a lot of coins, might get a little bimp to keep the customer happy.

I have not seen anyone else mention this, but it just seems to me that so many times where someone has sent a coin in for grading they are disappointed and are able to link to many other coins that seem by the photos to be lesser quality and with higher grades.

One person sent in his long held Jefferson it came back with a huge ugly scratch and a big old fingerprint on it, another person got his coin back with a terrible grade and the wrong year on the label.

The only thing I saw so far in common with submissions that came back with questionable calls are the people that submitted them were not submitting lots of coins, which makes me wonder wether there is not a customer bump that also happens.

First batch was 6 coins. One was a 1916 Lincoln cent that I picked out of a dealer's bargain bin. It looked like maybe it had a chance of being a matte proof so I sent it in. It came back MS-64.

I see. The reason I ask is I was concidering sending in a bunch at a time to start the process of getting my entire collections TPG because it seems with all the counterfits around soon no one will buy anything that has not been authenticated. Cant really say I blame them, I just dont like the idea of paying some other guys to grade my coins.

Well ya gotta pay. I'll tell ya what I would do, and 90 percent of members here won't do.
ANACS has specials the month of June. Send 10 coins in for the economy package which works out to about $12 per coin for grading. You have to add shipping. If you like what they do then see what specials they run for July.
And you don't have to join any clubs or pay any dealers.
