Hello all, again. I just returned from a short vacation and got my first box of halves today. I was thrilled when I found 22 coins with silver.... As follows:
    1964- 2
    1966- 2
    1967- 5
    1968- 8
    1969- 5

How did I do? When I get other boxes, can I expect similar results? (I REALLY want a Franklin...)

Take a look at the pic if you wish.

    Thanks!

    Welcome NTC2010!

For your first time out I'd say you did quite good. It won't always be like that however. I did 2 boxes boxes this past weekend without a single silver coin (did get 3 beat up proofs as a minor consolation prize though). In general I'd say boxes can sometimes be feast or famine...though heavily biased towards the famine side. I have found over $90 in silver in one box before (it included Walkers, Franklins and Kennedy's) but that would be the exception. On avg you may expect to get 2-3 silver coins per box. So 22 is pretty good out of the starting gate. Keep it up.

Very very cool, it is always nice to find that many silvers, sometimes you can find more.
A lot of the times you will see though, there is absolutely NO silver, and sometimes you could get a Walker.
    You just never know.
    Congrats ;)

I've been through many dry boxes. I went through $5000 worth last weekend and only found 3 40% coins. I did get a bag with over 1600 40% coins in it a few weeks ago. That keeps me in the game. Your best odds are customer rolls unless you can get that bag from a machine where someone cashes a bunch of silver in.

  6. Whenever you can get U.S. silver coins for face, you did very well. Congrats! TC

Thanks. I might try to get a new box next week...

What was your best box of halves?

Get bags if you can. (unless you can get customer wrapped boxes). Boxes have been processed, which means someone had to monitor the machine filling all those rolls. Bags however could be all automatically filled by coin counters in bank lobbies and grocery stores.

I have found that I can search loose coins faster than I can search boxed rolls. The only problem is turning the coins back in. If I have a box I can just reuse it. With bags either have to find an empty box or have my roll count verified. I went through this on Monday with $5000 and it sucked.

Me and a buddy of mine went to a local bank today and they had $320 worth of halves. We both them all (they were loose and not rolled) and I think we got a pretty good haul. We got 25 40%, 2 64 Kennedy, 2 walking liberties, 1 franklin, and a 1908 Barber half dollar.

I believe you beat the average. 20 40% is quite a good box.

How many coins come in a bag? I cannot really go over $500 with a box.

People actually put those coins back into the bank? You've got to be pulling my leg...
