I am thinking about cracking some Presidential Dollar proof sets to send in to NGC. My question is... Can I send them in in their proof set or do I have to crack the set myself and then send them in flips as individual coins? Any help is needed to figure this out.
Yep, they'll take sets in their original holders. I had my '52 and '53 proof sets put in one of their 5 coin holders. Sent it to them in a Capital holder as I bought it. Plus if you do a crossover you don't need to crack them out. All sorts of things like that.
Again I am new to the grading of coins and am just now getting back into them. I am researching Mercury dimes and can't find a meaning for the designation msfb. Does anyone on here know what that means?
Definately keep your mint coins in their original mint plastic. Less risk of damage, and besides, NGC charges a $1 per coin if they are taped or stapled in flips, and you certainly don't want to rish putting them in PVC flips, no matter how short of a time they are in there.
If you look on the reverse of the Mercury dime there will be three sets of bands wrapped around the axe. The top set has three sections, all 3 need to be completely split. the middle and bottom set will have two sections and they to have to be completely split. Most companies are just concerned with the middle bands since that is the set that will vary from split to not split in most cases.
May I ask why you want your Presidential proof coins certified? You write that you are just entering the field so it isn't likely that you will spot a PR70 vs. a PR69, which might be the only way to recoup the money you will spend for certification.
I am planning on getting them certified just as a personal collection. Truth is that my girlfriend got me the proof set and I am kind of using them as a test run with the whole grading thing. I would like to have the whole presidential set graded.
yes NGC even states on their site they will remove any coins from the existing case/slab/cartrage and place it in their encaped specialty case.
Yes, after closer inspection, I did see where it says it can be sent in with the orignial US Mint capsules. I appreciate everyones help on this matter!!!
That is only for PCGS, they require just the center band. NGC requires all 3 bands to be split with no breaks.
