    Hey guys,
When I was roll searching last week this Half caught my eye.
The Half on the Left is the Subject and the 1 on the Right is the Control...
The Half has a Proof like appearance: Shiny, Mirrory. It was probably just buffed or something.
Is there anyway a Business planchet could get stamped like a Proof planchet, would?
    Thanks,
    SM

well, i'm DEFINATELY no expert on errors, but my teacher whos the coin guy of my county bought 2 whole full sets of G-BU Franklins. he looked under 15x magnification and said "whizzed"

He showed me pictures and a story about how to whiz a coin.

this looks like every other coin he showed me..

Whiz is not alwas the correct diagnosis. I came across a Denver 1997 Half a while back that very much looked like a proof that was in circulatoin for a couple of months. I couldn't believe that a business strike could have mirrored fields so I took out the microscope and checked it out.

No matter how hard I looked I could not find a post mint alteration. The field looked awesome. I would have sent the coin in but there were some ugly scars on the face and a large hash mark across the obv.

I wish I could have found it 5 years ago.

i realize that whizzing is not always the correct diag, but this quite seriously looks to me like whizzing. There are hairlines on the field, and looks like also some repeated scratching on the face.

    Hey guys,
Thanks for your posts. I do agree that this has been Whizzed (there a tons of little stratchs)!!! I just thought I'd check and see what your guys opinion was. :)

I still was wondering: Can a Business planchet every get on a Proof Planchet? Has it ever been recorded?
    Thanks again,
    SM

There have been occasions when business strike coins have been struck with dies intended to strike Proof coins - like the Wide AM cents and the '99 $5 & $10 AGE's. There have also been many times that used Proof dies were used for business strikes when the mint ran out of business strike dies.

But to the best of my knowledge there has not been a case of a Proof being struck on a business strike planchet or business strike being struck on a Proof planchet.

I can think of several cases of a business strike planchets being struck by proof dies in the 19th century. Only one case comes to mind in the 20th and that was a case where it was "helped" into the press. As for proof planchets being struck by business strike dies, yes that happens. Usually because the proof planchets get rejected for a flaw. Rather than destroy they are used for business strike production.

Other reasons a busness strike coin could look like a proof. New dies often produce coins with prooflike qualities. Dies that are polished to remove clash marks or other small defects will often produce coins with prooflike qualities. And in that case there can be polish lines left in the fields that can resurlt in the "hairlines" that were mentioned in regard to the coin that started this thread.
