As everyone knows, Jamie Franki's design was chosen to be the new obverse for the Jefferson Nickel. I had the pleasure of viewing his original drawing when it was on display at a coin design exhibit that Jamie did in Salisbury, NC. Here is a picture of the drawing: Also on display were some other designs that Jamie did for the new nickel that weren't chosen. Here are three of them, two reverses and one obverse: And here is one more, actually my personal favorite, that I don't think that the good people of Virginia would approve of . The obverse is of another person named Jefferson who lived on the grounds of Monticello, and the reverse is of another building on the Monticello grounds:
WOW, that is pretty tough on old Tom. If you think about it though you could do the same for each of our denominations! How about putting internment camps on the back of the dime or the Trail of Tears on the back of the Twenty. By golly habious corpus (Best attemp at spelling) on the cent and five. And there wouldn't be room on the half for all the trash. No matter what man or woman for that matter you put on a coin they are still human. For ALL have come short of the glory of GOD. There is NONE rightous, no not ONE. Not sticking up for old Tom but owning slaves was not his only fault and in my humble opinion not his biggest fault just have to be careful how we judge someone that lived back then by todays standards. Althought slavery was reprehensible it was 'legal' and there are things today that are 'legal' but none the less reprehensible. Thats why I think we (America) should not have presidents or real historical people on our coinage and currency but get back to the concepts of our early coinage and currency. The early congress wanted to honnor George Washington by minting a coin with his likeness and he was repulsed by the idea stating only kings and tyrants had their portraits on coinage. His political opponents actually had coinage with his likenss minted to as we would say get under his skin (Wasn't legat tender tough). We come a long way haven't we. You can say the Barber series coinage was boring but who was she and did she carry baggage we can point back at in disgust? Then their are the golden age of coinage the St Gauldens, Morgan, Walker, Mercury, Indian head nickel and cent. Might not have liked any particular design but couldn't dig up any dirt on the individuals. We come along way from there haven't we? Now we have 2 slave owners one who trampled our civil right and one the did nothing but get shot! I say take them all off the coinage and currency! Save them for commenorative stuff! Well thats my two bits I'll get of my soap box.
Nobody's saying these people are perfect, but in the long view, they have more positive aspects than negative ones. Though I always thought it was ironic, considering how George Washington felt about being put on a coin, that the Washington quarter was started to honor his 200th birthday, lol...
Exactly, On both statments. I would just like to see some real artistic coinage in my lifetime other than Presidents! Relegate them to comm. and let the people have their coinage back!
Oh how I wish one of the two Franki reverses would have made it! Both far superior to the bland re-engraved same old, same old we are going to get again in 2006.
I am not sure, but I think it will go below the date on the obverse. I think I remember Jamie Franki saying it wasn't decided for sure. It will probably be decided on by the engraver. I'll ask around and see if I can't find out more info on where the mintmark will go.
I just received an e-mail from a very reliable source confirming that the mintmark will be on the obverse under the date.
