My friend gave me a 20 Francs note from "Banque d' Etat du Moroc" (Morocco), a souvenir from her father who was a top turret gunner on a B-24. She wanted to know if "it was worth anything", but as you can see from the attached scans it is pretty tattered and torn! Question: Can anyone tell me or direct me to a site that will give the exchange rate between francs and dollars in 1941? On the obverse between "vingt francs" and "20 francs" is printed "6-3-41", which I take to be the date. I would like to find out if 20 francs was worth 20 cents or 20 dollars or something in between in 1941. Thanks for any information or leads you can give.
Not sure if this is what you're looking for but it may help: http://www.insee.fr/en/themes/indicateur.asp?id=29&page=achatfranc.htm
Boy, that's a well-used note! At the time, the Franc in Morocco was tied to the French Franc. Here's a chart from Wikipedia that shows the value of the French Franc then, as compared to 2007 Euros. So it looks like it was worth about 0.4 Euros in 2007, which I think would be somewhere around 60 cents. Dave PS: I guess I need to type faster
The franc-dollar exchange rate during the war was the subject of much discussion among the Allies. They eventually settled on a rate of 100 francs to a dollar.
The only real value it has would be to her, as a souvenir of her father when he was a warrior for his country.
Thanks to all of you for your research! It's been very helpful. I didn't expect the actual bill to be worth anything numismatically since it has been through a war (literally!), but I wondered what its' buying power was back then. Thank you very much for your effort. P.J. Stack
