got this today with the bit of money i got from selling some other unwanted coins. going to say its G4 porous due to the mix of detail with a 15 degree rotation. i believe its 3 over 2 but would like some extra opinions. any other comments would be great. i love the way that hair decides to sit on my coin as i image it.
yes it is the 3/2. Easy way to tell the position of the leaftip under the E (RI). this is a N1 R2 coin
Yes, this is N-1 1823/2. With these Middle Dates, normally the best reverse die indicators are the leaf points under D, S2, F, an C(A). Unfortunately, for the only two known original reverse dies, these leaf positions are very similar and it's hard to tell on this coin. Similar story on the obverse - the orientation of star 6 with the coronet point is diagnostic - but for 1823, they are so similar that it doesn't help. Fortunately, there are two additional diagnostics. For the reverse, look at the leaftip under E3 (in AMERICA); in the overdate N-1, it is on the left side of E's upright, while on N-2 it is near the center of the upright. On the overdate's obverse, the top curl of the 3 bends around and points almost flat "due east", while on the normal date N-2 it points southeast. Most importantly, the underdate "2" is sometimes pretty clear, though it's hard to see on this one. The other diagnostics confirm it's an overdate. Congratulations on a truly tricky date ! Very, very tough in higher grades. Nice work, Matt ! :thumb:
Yes. It's the N-1. The leaf tip under R of AMERICA is also a good site if there's damage at the tip under E.
Also on N-1 the curl is over inner curve of the 2 and on the N-2 it is in the center of the 2. On N-1 10th berry on reverse is below right base of A, while on the N-2 it is just left of the left edge of the M. PS - Nice coin.
Nice cent. I'm horrible at attributing these even though I've practiced a number of times on some of mine.
I am afraid I cannot help with the attribution of this middle date cent. But others have already confimed that it is the 1823/2. It looks quite nice, and a desirable date Lugia! Here is a close up of the date on my 1823/2. I though this might help. The tails of the 2 are just visible under the 3. Not that easy to see though. With my eyes, I can only see it under magnification.
