Can anyone tell me what kind of coin this is and if it's worth anything? I've had it for more then 40 years and it looks pretty much the same as when I got it. I took it to a coin show once and no one could tell me what it was for sure, but one guy offered me one hundred dollars for it which I thought was strange if he didn't even know what it was, so I didn't sell it I appreciate any info. Thanks!!
I lightened them up a bit to help. Cool coin. I suppose it's fair to say they have not been cleaned in a while.
Guess I should have said it's just one coin (front/back). And yes, that would be safe to say. I've never done anything to the coin. It's larger then a quarter and heavy. I'm not a coin collector so I wouldn't know the proper way to clean it. I'm not sure what it's made of and didn't want to make it worse then it already is. It looks better then the the pic, I had to scan it because I let my buddy use my camera. If there's anyone interested in seeing a better pic I'll take one when my camera gets back. I'm not really looking to sell it, just curious if it's worth anything. I've had it for so long and I don't know anything about it. So I figure it's time, hey? lol. Thanks!
Byzantine for sure The obverse is the second pic The big M on the reverse stands for Follis (same denomination than in the late roman empire) Cucumbor
Kraco,Your coin will be difficult to identify since most of the inscription is unreadable.I can see IVS PP AVG which is the remnant of the issuing Emperor's name,Pater Populi (father of his people) and Augustus. An example would be Justinius (Justin I).The two crosses and star design was used on a lot of Follis and doesn't help a whole lot with identification.Suffice it to say,you have a 3rd or 4th century 40 Nummi (M) Follis of the Byzantine Empire based in Constantinople. The mintmark is gone but I suspect it's CON. Unfortunately, the value is minimal especially in this condition, probably $10-20 based on my experience.Hope this helps.
