Well I just bought this coin for my 1983 error collection. I hope to be able to add a 25C on 10C someday!!
There was another one up for auction and it was graded MS66. Link
After looking at my pictures and the MS66 pictures.......I don't understand the grade.
Mine has less hair detail but the reverse looks the same.

Here is the first one graded MS66 by NGC.

well, the hair does appear to have some wear, but---

only you can tell from up close.

I believe your coin is undergraded and its not wear that your seeing on the head. Notice how well centered the MS-66 quarter is and yours is offset. The 66 got a stronger and more even strike. Your quarter was offset and the right side got a nice strike because it was closer to the collar. The metal flow on the left side pooped out. Does this make any sence?

The coin is graded acurately, there is wear on the hair on the obverses, and the breast area on the reverse which is the focal point of the coin, right on yes Au58.

It is hard enough to tell weak strike from light wear, but from pics..... There is nothing there I can prove is wear, but I am not very confident of anything here.

I agree with NGC completely. The wear on the hair, especially around the ear makes this a definite AU.

    Jamie,

There definitely appears to be wear on the coin. Comparing to that particular MS66 really isn't helping your case. Maybe if we compare the AU58 to this clad Washington, it would help.

Now, is it wear or weak strike?

I do believe that Jamies coin is a weak strike. It is on a smaller, sot he strike would be off set one way or the other. Thus forcing the metal to flow away from the well struck side.
    Nice coin BTW :)

Well the reverse looks to be a stronger strike but the wear on the obv does make it a AU to me.

My vote is the grade is pretty close. Some wear on the hair and the breast feathers. Of course in hand grading is still the only way to confirm.

This isn't a very good example for comparing either, wheres the breast feathers?
