I was reading another thread here and it was about a "black beauty" Jefferson nickel. I remember I saved a couple of coins when I was going through some Canadian change. One of them looks very close in color to the Jefferson mentioned in the other thread. Anyway, is this nickel possibly the same type? Also, this quarter has a proof like obverse with a matte reverse. Is this possibly an error, or could it be from being inside a push book or something? It doesn't look like tarnish damage or anything like that. It's perfectly uniform.
Matte Quarter Not sure on the nickel... but the quarter looks just like a coin that has been acid treated... if you take gold testing acid and drop it on one side the same "matte" look... You can try it on another quarter and see if it matches... I would try 10K gold test first. Hope this helps. ProofCoins
The nickel may have been a metal detecting find. Depending on soil and moisture conditions, the nickels take on different colors. This is one of my "red" nickels:
Thats a good point. I do metal detect also, and didn't even think of that since it wasn't a detecting find. I wonder if there is a definitive way to tell. I also wonder about the quarter, I have never seen one like that, thats why I kept it.
Here's a few coins that I've dug. Notice the difference in toning on each of them. Some were found in soccer fields and others were found in lower areas of the park where water accumulates.
