harshly was never a word that I used. The coin has clearly been cleaned. The center is fully clean, but if you look into the protected areas of this coin, you can see the dark, black toning that at one time (IMHO) was mottled and covered more of the obverse of this coin.

look at the braid and where the ear would be. That is remnants of tone that are consistent with the rest of the coin. The fact that this coin is missing toning from that area. It is MHO that the coin has been cleaned to remove that toning.

Details grades are IMHO for coins that the dipping is notable afterward and does not necessarily mean that the coin has been harshly cleaned, but that will also depend on one's definition of the term "harshly cleaned".

I just meant Harshly as in it won't grade.
IMO it' did/does look dipped but not what I was calling cleaned and thought it would still grade.
By cleaned and not putting a grade I was assuming you meant it would not grade from that, is that what you meant?

A couple of hints; None of these coins have been cleaned. All 3 are accompanied by Anacs photo grading certificates from the 1980's. Two of them I submitted to PCGS and are currently in PCGS plastic.

And everyone knocks ANACS as too easy grading. Some of their early works were every bit as tought as the others.

Like Maxwell Smart said..."missed it by that much" :D
Just the quarter to a 67 not a 66...that's pretty good.

    Nice coins!
