My birthday and Father's Day are within the same month, so I always combine the two for a gift. I had my gift picked out, an extra fine 45 Draped Bust Half Cent from an online dealer I like very much. My wife and I went on line to purchase my gift, and it had sold. I did have a back-up, an almost uncirculated 55 Twenty Cent Piece, went to purchase it, and it had been sold. I looked around for a couple of days or so. Couldn't find anything I could afford that I wanted. Well, anyway I was browsing on ebay and at the time just for curiosity I was looking at the ASE Anniversary Sets listed for sale. My wife was curious, so I explained to her and showed the reverse proof, and how one had to send them in to get them graded as an Anniversary Set. I also told her I actually preferred the ungraded set with all the original mint paperwork and packaging. We kept on talking, and I guess the converation ended with me saying something like one of these days I wanted to get one. Also during the conversation I had told her I really looked hard, but couldn't find anything for my type set. My wife and son bid on an Anniversary Set just like I had told her I preferred, they won the set. They got the set for what I thought was a good price, a little under $270.00. I since looked at these sets at various online dealers with a price range of $330.00 to $425.00 raw with all the mint paperwork and packaging. I'm really not sure, but it appears they did well. I'm sure someone knows more about these than I do as far as value, so good or bad comments accepted. It does appear to me, without any real price knowledge, they have come down over the last couple of years or so. Regardless, what a great thing for them to do. I got something I really like, but would have probably never actually bought it myself. What a great hobby, so many treasures out there. Just had to share this with people I know will understand.
Thanks, I appreciate it. After rereading the what I wrote maybe I shouldn't have included the price, but I am curious. I did have a laugh thinking about my wife bidding with my son telling her to keep bidding, don't let it get away, Dad will love it, and so on. I suppose for that to be funny you have to know them, and be able to see them at the computer going "hell bent for leather" on ebay. It is very comical to me and very dear at the same time.
Not to be a putz, but it's fine to mention the price. It gives useful background in the event someone wants to purchase something like that for himself. In fact, this morning the radio mentioned a website in which people could look up various service providers and get a notion of how well they did the project and how much it cost! I think the internet's useful for giving some comparative grounds for things.
Now, for your next Birthday/Father's Day gift, you might want to (conveniently) flip through some St. Thomas, V.I. condos for sale while she is nearby. Chris
In their mind they did good. Coins and sets there of, are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. So if your wife and son paid just under $270 for this set of Eagles to give you a special gift on Fathers day, well to them it was a good deal for that price.
Congrats man! It is good to see a post from ya', especially one of this nature Looks to me like you've got a family that cares about you.
Happy Birthday/ Fathers day Pop. I think your FAM is fab for purchasing a set like this for you. I also think they did well with the price. Enjoy your Eagles Larry.....
That's a fair price for the current market. They were down to around $199 for the longest time but they have been moving up again. That was the set that got me back into the hobby back in 2006. The profits from flipping about 350 of those sets have sure gotten me through some tough financial times of late with getting laid off and the loss of my house. A month after they sold out, they were going for $600+ a set. Those were the days for sure.
