Hello everyone, I'm new to this so please bare with me. I recently found what could be either an old coin or medal at work the other day and have been trying to find it everywhere possible on the internet but cannot seem to find any information on it however after looking on this forum for a few hours it would appear that there is alot of educated people here who seem to know a good deal about old coins. I have a picture of both sides of the coins and I will try to type what it says on the coin. It Reads Around the Edge: First English Statue To Francis Drake To the Inside: Unveiled At Tavistock, September 27 1883 http://www.cointalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=78151&stc=1&d=1276084124 On the other side it reads: Presented To His Birthplace Tavistock by Hastings IXth Duke Of Bedford http://www.cointalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=78152&stc=1&d=1276085149 Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance. David.
It's not a coin. It, like it says, is a medal commemorating the unveiling of a statue of Drake, donated to his hometown by an English aristocrat. Such private issues were common in the 19th Century, sometimes observing long-forgotten events.
