    I could see that in a PCGS 65 holder and not question it, from the image.
    It's a really cool coin.

    I have always been under the impression that the grading companies were somewhat reluctant to put brown Lincolns in 65BN holders. It really comes from my personal experience getting coins graded... and nothing else... I have just have seen a lot of really really nice brown coins end up in 64BN holders.

    INDEED! But....the eye appeal on this coin should overcome IMO. I'm still surprized it's in a 64 holder unless the pictures aren't telling the whole story. Somethings holding it back or it's the "brown stigma".

    Not sure about the other companies but it is very tough to get PCGS to grade 65BN copper and it's near impossible to get 66BN.

    To illustrate this point, just need to look at the population reports... here's the pop data on the 1909 VDB which is a good case to look at given its relatively high mintage and the fact it was saved and available in high grades.

    64BN=311
    65BN=109
    66BN=7

    64RB=1,596
    65RB=752
    66RB=111

    64RD=4,255
    65RD=4,204
    66RD=1,843
    67RD=201

    Of course it likely plays into the numbers that many people are less likely to send in a nice BN coin than they are a full on RD example given the relative values. But it's pretty clear that the company is more reluctant to give out the higher grades on BN coins than they are on the RD examples. You can have a perfect looking BN with tons of luster that would grade 68 if it were a RD, but you'd probably be maxed out at 66BN.

    For those who were wondering, the 1914-D Lincoln has 43 examples in PCGS MS64BN and only 9 examples in PCGS MS65BN.

    I disagree, there are many beautys in 65 and 66 BR holders, ask Charmy about her 24-D in a 65 BR........I sold it to her.

    I have not seen this coin in hand, but as always I would not knock her professional judgement. If she says this coin has a shot at 65-BR, I believe her. Worst she can do is 64 BR.

    Charmy, once again a very beautiful coin. I think the coin will at least puls if not go to a 65 but as you all know, I am not as experienced as a lot of you but the strike on that coin is great. Keep us posted.
    BTW, you can just send that 16 MPL lincoln to me and by pass PCGS. I have been eyeing the penny on your website for a month now.

    Jack,

    Don't get me wrong I think the original coin is a screamer... It's just how they grade these things that I'm commenting on. That magical 65BN grade is a hard one to get.... even with the right coin.

    Heath, I'd be happy to see that pretty little puppy go to a new loving home such as yours! Just let me know whenever you're ready to make the "transition." ;)

    Charmy, Who had the beautiful Brown Lincoln collection at Wayne Herndons table in Los Angeles?
    That was a beauty to behold, but I do not remember the " pedigree " of the set.

    I'm not a copper guy, as I've told you, but nevertheless, great coin. A good example of why I think at times brown can be prettier than red depending on the toning of the coin. I think 64+ is possible but 65 unlikely. But Jack and Thad and Raider know a lot more about copper than me. There are a few distracting marks but I think eye appeal is there. The Dutchman's comments make me wonder though whether PCGS discounts eye appeal a bit with respect to brown copper.
    Two other things: you're not coming to Baltimore in a couple weeks and dragging Todd with you? That stinks - a lot of dealers apparently skip the June date.

    Also, I got my Petty tickets for August in Jersey. Let me know how the show is in California since your date is earlier (sorry to all for the non-coin aside but my handle is Breakdown, after all).:hail::hail:

    That set belongs to Mike (Tortuga on CU) - he does have an amazing PCGS MS65/66 brown Lincoln cent, most of which are beautifully toned. He even bought a few from me and has been enticing (and/or begging) me to sell him some from my own personal collection!

    He recently had Todd photograph all of them and he posts them now and then on CU. They are a site to behold, that's for sure. One of the prettiest Lincoln sets I've ever seen.

    To me, the red sets have nothing on a set like this since Mike's coins come in various beautifully toned colors.

    Yes you're correct, neither one of us is doing the summer Baltimore. And actually, our Petty tickets aren't until October now, since they delayed release of the Mojo album. We saw him twice over the past few years and he does put on an amazing concert. I am curious, however, about how this concert will be since he will be doing new music, and I already listened to a couple songs from Mojo and they definitely have a different sound than his usual rock and roll.

    Ok, so sorry for the OT - back to coins!

    I think a BR-RB set has so much more personality than a red set. Nothing againt Stuart of course, but for us everyday people, that gemmy brown look is amazing.

    So much more chrachter.........And, so much less likley to turn

    FYI, here's the 1924-D Jack sold me that he was referring to. It's still in an NGC holder. Any thoughts on this pretty guy?

    Well you and I both have the same thing on our minds. The only problem is that I am a few dollars short. I guess I need to start picking up some bottles.:eek:

    Wow, another great looking Lincoln.
    BTW, I have a solution to our problem. I just need a 5 year payment plan.;)

    It is a nice coin and appears to deserve the 65, but it may or may not get it from PCGS, if that is what you are asking.

    I met "tortuga" at Long Beach last weekend and got to see some of his 65/66 BN coins and they were great!!!

    I see nothing that would stop it from a 66 in my eyes, it is a nice coin, and I've seen it in hand. My opinion is the same as it was then.

    I think the 14-D is nicer and it's a 64? LOL
