Actually these Swiss coins were made of .8350 silver, untill being switched to copper-nickel. and collect89, that 1856 Nova Scotia token is breathtakingly beautiful.
Very cool coins! I know that the Canadian 5 cent piece is comemerating the 200th anniversary of the isolization of nickel...or something along those lines. I only have one coin comparable to yours...a Swiss half franc from 1965. Not sure if it's silver or not (metal content means nothing to me) but it looks much better in person, it's one of the few truly uncirculated coins I own...but it didn't scan well!
Very nice! Here's one from Heritage that sold for $1,495.00 : http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=410&Lot_No=12507&src=pr
There is a reason why that "So G'sell so" is on the medal. Here is a brief explanation in English: http://www.iwoe.de/noerdlingen/1/uk.htm More in German is here for example: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St.-Georgs-Kirche_(Nördlingen)#Turm So the story is probably just a legend. But since the tower guard still says that every night (these days between 10 pm and midnight only ), it is at least locally famous. As for the eagle, that is the royal eagle from the times of the Holy Roman Empire. When used in a city's CoA, as in this case, it usually means that the place was a free city within the empire, ie. not part of any duchy, kingdom, etc. ... Christian
Every coin has a story. You're always so helpful! I will print the story and keep it with the medal. The link was great fun to read.
Heh.... well one knows how important of a commodity smokes can be for those who smoke. I wasn't into coins much when I was in the Army, but the coolest thing I ever swapped anything for was a North Korean Kalashnikov bayonet... I traded some junk food for it, candy and the like. I don't know where he came across the bayonet, but I can assure you he didn't get it himself, it was probably given to him from an uncle or relative. Cool coin, nice trade.... a fun souvenier.
