My thoughts exactly. Even though we are told the grader does not know this, I think they do.:secret:

Damn, now that's what I call a nice 1914-D. Anyone know what the nicest example ever graded is? It can't be much higher than that as collectors did not become aware of the scarcity of this date until the mid 1930s.

Both PCGS and ANACS have graded MS66 browns. Not sure about NGC. SEGS has probably graded MS70:goofer:.

Do you mean SGS? I have actually found SEGS to be a reasonably accurate grading service.

I think it is an extreme risk to take on valuable coins.if they come back QC "questionable color" or AS "Altered surface" those are the 2 most common issues with copper, then what will you do?. back to NGC?

It's been crossed into a PCGS 64 holder, so if they do think it's QT/AT now, that would be covered under their guarantee.

*Btw, I think it's a beautiful coin, and has a very good shot at 64+.

yes it would be. PCGS just got rid of their copper color guarantee recently. Accordingly, a drop in grade from 64RB to 64BN would no longer be covered. But PCGS does still have a grade guarantee. So a drop from 64BN to 63BN should be covered and of course a drop from 64BN to "Genuine" should be covered as well.

I would rather of kept the coin as is.and not risked it.sometimes the best thing to do,is nothing at all.

I'm not worried whatsoever about the grade being anything less, or the color being an issue, or it being altered in any way. I see a LOT of copper and this is an absolutely stunning coin, completely original, no issues whatsoever, you can take my word for it.

Charmy, from the pics the coin looks like a solid 65 BN. So I can't imagine it not getting the "+" if it stays 64. But..Lord knows I've been wrong before...

    Nice penny!!
I can see 64+ or a 65 too. Not RB though.

As for the sending on in in their holder, what would they do if they were even thinking of dropping a rb to a bn then they would not would they? I understand that there is no guarantee but I'm just not sure if that means they would down grade a coin.

Duke, not sure what you're asking, but this coin is certified brown already, rightly so. If it had been graded red brown, and they now determined it to be brown, PCGS and I would have to work that out since I purchased the coin last year and it is my understanding that as long as it hasn't changed hands since 1/1/10, I believe the guarantee still stands.

    Sorry to confuse this thread.

My question is if (not this coin) a coin was say graded PCGS 64RD and is not in the guarantee period. And someone sent it in in it's holder trying to get a +. Then PCGS decided it was not a RD anymore would they leave the coin in the holder or call the owner first, or just down grade the color regardless?

Since PCGS has been known to go so far as to dip coins - without asking the owner's permission - I rather think they would just downgrade the color designation and move on.

Thanks. I was about to ask that same question. Would they evaluate a coin in a holder from another TPG and leave it alone if they felt they would only downgrade it?

You are allowed to designate a "minimum" grade on the submission form which would include the color designation, so that if PCGS felt it didn't meet that minimum grade, they would leave it in the original holder.
