I just bought a scanner last week and this is my first try using it...and the software. Would you be so kind as to tell me your opinions on the grade of this dollar? I'm kind of a novice at all the new grading parameters that have emerged in the last 30 years. I looked at the size of some pics already posted and hopefully I have resized this within reason. If not, I apologize.

Well, as a Trade Dollar I'd go VF-20. As a Seated Liberty I'd have to give it a F-15, LOL ;) Just kidding :D

Thank you Bonedigger. The coin has slightly better detail, especially on the obverse, then the scan shows. As I am trying to learn a little about grading, may I ask how you came to this conclusion? I'm certainly not doubting you. I'm just trying to understand what to look for. I had "guessed" Extra Fine, as I'm not knowledgable enough on the sub-categories of these lower grades.Thank you again for responding.

Yes, welcome. I'll bet the coin is MUCH better in hand compaired to the scan. I have several (coins) like that. I tried using a scanner at first then just went with digital photo's. They enlarge better for me and are less complex than operating that darn scanner, LOL :)

I love trade dollars!, On some of the older coinage to get real technical, is where "SPLIT- Gradeing" comes to play.( Like the Bust Series)and the(old coppers) Some dealers do it, and most dont. But from the photo, Id say VF-40.

That looks fake...look at the head and eye and the detail looks "wet"....

Can you get a weight on this and let us know what it is....
Hope this isn't a fake but Trade Dollar Fakes are known alot.

Oh NO!! That would be terrible. I bought three coins from the same seller on ebay, so I will take all three tommorrow and get them weighed at a jewelry store. That will be something....I was giving up one collecting hobby of 15 years experience because of the high prices and reproductions/fakes/fantasy pieces, only to buy fakes on the first three coins I own. LOL

I looked at that link for Trade Dollars and I can't tell any difference. That sites pics are smaller. I'll just have to weigh the coins and see what happens. Thanks for all the input so far. I'd rather know the truth now then carry these around for years thinking they are originals and continuing to buy from this same seller...and maybe they are real (fingers crossed). Thanks again guys.

Well, I just got back from a very reputable coin/jewelry dealer (high end stuff too) and he has confirmed what Speedy suspected. The Trade Dollar is a fake. Albeit a very, very good one. No consulation for me though! LOL

The two half dollars I purchased from the same seller were original although the Liberty Seated was "harshly cleaned" and the dealer "wouldn't have it if it was his". I have emailed the ebay seller since he does have a refund policy, so it's a wait and see situation now. I feel so stupid!!! LOL Soooo much to learn.

Sorry to hear this...maybe by some chance the dealer and myself will be proved wrong!
Hope the guy takes it back
Don't feel stupid...everyone buys a bad coin....and yet nobody is stupid.
