I was looking through some of the coins I have collected while in the Navy. I traded for some coins as overseas America coins were hard to come by and you could get a pretty good trade. I traded something (I don't know what) for a French 1941 50 centimes. I don't have a world coin book but do know France was occupied during this time. Can someone tell me something about this coin and two can someone recommend a world coin book. Ice
Is it aluminium-bronze or just aluminium? There were two types produced for that year. As for a coin book? Krause's Standard Catalog of World Coins, now unfortunately split into two volumes: 1901-2000 and 2001-Present. Previous centuries are also available. Plenty for sale on the internet and the older editions are cheaper.
The french 1941 50 centimes exists in 2 different materials: aluminum-bronze (82 958 000 pieces, F0.15 VF0.25, XF1.00, UNC 3.00) and pure aluminum (129 758 000, F0.15, VF 0.25, XF0.50, UNC2.00). The obverse should have a face to the left with on one side "REPUBLIQUE" (Republic) and on the other side "FRANCAISE" (french), the reverse should have the text "LIBERTE-EGALITE-FRATERNITE"(liberty, equality and brotherhood) with "50 centimes" below and below the year "1941" and on both sides of the reverse there should be a cornucopia.
