Mike, This coin has an obvious bridge between the 3rd & 4th steps under the second pillar. It is still a nice coin but the first coin is a much better submission candidate. Paul
Mike how is it that you consider that outcome to be possible when these are your own words ? If you say yourself that 2 steps are broken then that means there can only be 4 unbroken steps on the coin. And the FS designation requires at least 5 unbroken steps. So I'm confused.
here's an explanation: when 2 steps are broken, I am referring to a bridge between 2 steps. That means that instead of 6 full steps there are only 5. You would need to bridge or break more than 2 steps to get to 4, and so on... broken is probably poor terminology on my part. I meant merged.
Perhaps to avoid confusion we should state that the riser (line) is broken. In the case of this coin, the bridge is on the 5th riser (line). There are 6 steps and 5 risers on a Jefferson Nickel. Count the number of complete risers (lines), add one, and you have the number of full steps. This coin has 4 complete risers (lines), +1, equals 5 Full Steps.
ok... you're on, Doug. We'll see who's right. The coin will go to PCGS and in a month or so, we'll see the results. anyone else have an opinion?
the coin in post #37 is the same as the one in the OP. That is the coin that I am submitting and betting that it gets FS. The coin in post #36 is a coin that I was comparing it to, but don't think is as nice.
I agree with you that the #36 is not as nice as #37 but I think the #36 would get 5FS and #37 will not. Great example of how tough it is to be a TPG'er though
The coin in #36 to me seems like the riser does get blended in but does not break the line so that is a 5FS to me. Now the look of the steps on this one look more like they are missing becasuse the lack of strike is smooth throughout. Take the FS on this one is 5-5-5-6. So it's just not as much there. The coin in #37 to me seems like the riser line breaks just enough to call it a 4 and would look like 5-4-5-6 to me. Now if you look at the entire coin and not talking about steps the #37 looks to have more luster and smoother surfaces but just not FS to me. It might grade it though on a good day.
Not exactly. I tried to post a modified picture straight from Photoscape, but the post kept using the unmodified picture. Since I couldn't delete the post... Error! Anyway, I think the grader was having a bad day when he gave the nickel on post #36 5FS unless the photo is really bad. I can't see any sign of the 5th step at all except for a small area on the left and the far right.
It's a nice coin, but not a full step. Look at the bottom step, you have a few nickes, and the graders will not give it a full step. Sorry. -O)
Okay, how much do you want to bet? No way NGC gives that coin full steps but PCGS is a 50/50 shot from what I have seen in their holders.
