Anybody else really bad at selling anything from your collection?

I had to sell a $10 coronet and a $20 st. to pay some bills a few years ago....of course when gold was around 750. Ever since I have a really hard time selling any coins....I have tons of wheats and a huge bag of world coins that I really have no interest in, but everytime I get ready to sell them I balk. I have sold bullion/junk silver, but only to buy coins.....My biggest problem is I don't want te sell something that some day may be worth alot. Maybe not to me, but maybe to my kid or grandkids. I guess I have the hoarder instinct as well

I had collected coins since the early 1980's and then once before when I was a kid. I thought I could never sell them..well almost 2 years ago I switched to 100% Paper Money and sold all the remaining coins in my collection...things like the 3 piece AGE and ASE Set (Reverse Proofs) all the AGE collection which was quite significant...it all went to Paper and I have never ever really looked back and said "What did I do". I am very happy with my choice and feel I have moved on to a higher realm of Numismatics. Paper is way behind coins and will one day catch up to them. There are many varities that have fewer than 200 pieces remaining that are known instead of millions.
Now do not get me wrong, I still love coins and there are so really nice collections here on CT and elsewhere..but they jus do not do it for me any longer.

    You asked..so you got it.

Totally agree; "Look love, if we get this huge Plasma big screen t.v., you'll be able to see the detail much better, and it won't hurt your eyes in the long run", little did she know I was looking forward to playing my video games in full size, LoL.

That's great man. Thanks for sharing. It may be blasphemy, but I can certainly see how the paper bug could bite a person. It just took you to the extreme. You actually opened my eyes to the world of currency a while back and it's amazing stuff. It's like another dimension that coins can never achieve.

It's probably best to keep it under wraps and keep it "well behind" as you say. If large numbers of people began opening their eyes to the beauty of our past currency, you might not be able to afford it anymore! It's wonderful, historical, art that 99% of people will never see in their lives. Despite how relatively recent much of it circulated.

I feel a kinship for all hoarders. I have not always parted with coins easily but I have sold some of my earlier coins or dupes. I sold a few to dealers, many others on Teletrade, which is a reasonable, fairly painless way to sell coins worth up to about $2,000.

Speaking of hoarders, the absolute best episode I saw was of some fellow named Dave who had been kicked out of the house by his wife, was driving around in a pickup full of stuff. The show follows this poor fellow as broke and nearly broken down, he attends a flea market and proceeds to spend his last dimes on a beat-up set of golf clubs that he gets ridiculously excited over, saying, "These are rare! Gotta have these -- they're left-handed!"
At which point, the narrator said, "There's only two problems. Dave's not left-handed and he doesn't play golf."
Such shows are great and at times, hit a little close to home. I believe the collector instinct and hoarder instinct are, if not brothers, certainly cousins.:smile

I have like 10 1904-o morgans (I completed the set with the exception of the 95S.) I have seven or eight 82 Morgan CC"s in other words if it was morgan and looking good I bought it. I am a Vam nut of course. But with silver touching 20 and OZ in started me to thinking about it I sorted out what I thought were my finest examples and put all the others in a box marked inventory. I could not make a move past that. The advice I got was sell your coins as you bought them if you want to make money on them. Still sitting on them....

My rule is that if I can reasonably expect to get another within two years (not talking price, but availability) then I can sell it. This helped me clear out a bunch of stuff from my collection that wasn't really that special or important. And of course, that money was turned into more irreplaceable coins!
