OK so the US mint issued a special 2009 UHR $20 gold coin modeled after the 1909 UHR coin ... I like this idea. What do you think about the Mint doing similar restrikes of some of the old hard to obtain silver type coins like the 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, or the Draped Bust Silver Dollar from the early 1800's? Issue in Uncirculated only. Put a low mintage on each type coin of 50,000 and limit the order to 1 per household. What do you all think? Thumbs up or thumbs down.
Thumbs up to the stuff they've already done - Buffaloes, ASEs, and First Ladies with Jefferson, Van Buren, and whoever was the Capped Bust prez.
The Mint does some things right but is very mediocre with many other designs. I'd like to see more continuity. And instead of bringing old designs back all of the time, I'd like to see some new representations of Liberty on our circulating coinage. We did change the nickel significantly, so that's a start. I know, there's the quarters, but even in their innovation, the Mint is still timid..... why change only the obverse of the nickel? Why not have a different representation of washington on the new quarters? Why continue to strike the same Kennedy half even though it doesn't circulate? Why change only the reverse of the cent? In the past, when designs changed, the whole coin changed. They just can't seem to take the plunge, even though the public seems perfectly willing to accept new designs, as proven with the quarters. I still say the Sac native american dollar is one of the best designs over the past decade, but it still doesn't circulate. Oh well, I also did enjoy the nickel commemoratives. At least for a couple years, the whole design changed. Steve
i agree with you ... with all the starving artists out there ... there must be a few talented ones that could design things as good as the coins we had back in 1921
Sorry I give a big thumbs down to the idea. Yes the old designs were great, but I would rather see great new designs rather than rehashing old ones and proving too the world that the glory days of the USA was a hundred years ago. The mint has the new designs part down pat, they just have to work on the GREAT part.
I'd love to see some type of American Heritage program where they'd release some sets over a few years, restriking classic designs in proof and uncirculated condition in sets for collectors. The way things are now (political and full of stubborn rules), it's going to be hard to find consistent coinage that appeals to most classic collectors.
