Stepping outside the box, or in this case outside the two set mentioned by the OT, consider Roosevelt dimes.
But I get the impression from the original post that the Franklins and Ikes have already been started. So one of them would be the way to go. And in that case I suggest the Franklins.

MY suggestion is to not try either the Ike or Franklin coins. My reasoning is so far you have a collection that many could be found in change. Or from rolls or bags from a bank. Your chances of ever finding an Ike or Franklin coin without purchasing from a dealer is very, very slim.
If I were you I'd try for a Lincoln Cent or Roosevelt Dime collection. Washington Quarters too are very accessable in normal change. Then as you accumulate them in mormal change, eventually you can upgrade to higher grades with purchases if you are still interested.
Not sure how old you are or how long you've been collecting coins but as with many hobbies, some people loose interest for many reasons. With coins I've found one reason for a loss in collecting is an ever increase in cost to complete a collection and those funds are just not available. Many younger individuals find many more important things to utilize thier money on as they become interested in them. For example members of the opposite sex or a car or computers and computer games. With a limited budget for spending, coins usually take a back seat to those more important items and the collection just gets shelved for now or maybe forever.
This is why I suggest a collection where purchasing most coins do not have to be purchased but can be more easily found in change.

I am currently working on my Lincoln Collection which I am winding down since most of the ones I now need are the key dates (with the exception of the teens). I am 30 and have been collecting through change most of my life. It wasn't until this past summer where I started to buy coins from dealers. I do agree that the collection does take a back seat when it comes to the higher priced coins. I know that my lincoln collection will when I have to buy the 09 S / 09 S VDB :(

Nope actually I havent started either. I do have a couple that I received from family members though I was throwing those 2 out there. That was why I asked.

If you want to do something that is cheaper (and cheaper is relative) and a lot more fun IMHO, collect Kennedy's. You can pull many of the from circulation and buy the proofs as you have the funds. It takes a little longer than either Frankies or Ikes but I think it was more fun too.

    I like that idea too...
So you could combine it to Franklins with Kennedy's...2 halves at one time. The Kennedy's would not cost much at all either.

I think the most boring set I ever put together were Ikes. I ususally collect 3 sets of everything but I just can't bring myself to put the last two sets of Ikes together.

    Moen,
why do you think that collecting Ikes were boring?

Well maybe it's just me but it is a short run set, I don't think the coins are all that attractive, and it is pretty easy to put together. It felt like it was over before it started. Others might feel differently and like the "quickness" of the set but I like series I collect to last a little longer. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

I like short run series. 2 center, 3 center are tops, proof merc's, proof walkers, proof buffalo's all Tops in my book.
It helps that they are also pretty as heck too :D

    Shreck,

    Ike's,
1.One of the most overlooked series in all numismatics until lately.
    2. New varieties being found all the time now that serious research has began
    on the series.
    3. Still can be found in banks sometimes,But getting harder now that more collectors are figuring out how rare some of them are.
    4. Just now starting to be seen on dealers tables in the last year in my area. (S.W. Michigan) taking up valuable real estate on dealer tables tells me that demand is rising. One local coin shop now has them in his cases for the first time I have ever seen other than the occasional Blue or Brown Ike. He has been in business since the 70's.
5.as long as there are no unforeseen complications the First of two new Eisenhower Books since 1998 are being released at the
Aug 10 Boston ANA Convention. the second hopefully will be in time for Christmas.
That is just a few right off the top of my head. My opinion on the subject of Ike's is COMPLETELY BIAS. I Like Ike.
It is not driven by profit. I have yet to sell a single one of my Ike's.
The reason is that I have had 4 1974 S Brown Ike's kicking around the safe for quite some time and was just checking out some articles on the Ike Group web site and sen one about 1974 S Silver Proof Micro "S" and thought I have a a handful in the safe. Turned out that I happen to have a Micro "S" in that group. It is a 1 die coin with an estimated mintage of 10,000. I know as soon as I sell some of my Ike's that someone will find something cool on the dates and Mint Marks that I sold.
My son told me why don't you sell some of the Doubles, Triples and higher multiples that you have to buy more coins with.
I informed him that I enjoy collecting them, I will sell for friends but I collect coins and that he will have to deal with selling them some day. His response, Now I have to learn even more about coins so I don't get ripped. Another Collector is made:rolleyes:

Just my Humble and bias opinion

    Terry

Yes, it is a short series, but I think you could make it fun by adding the different hub designs like the eagle eye and earth profile, doubled dies and other varieties like the Peg Leg.

Sort of a fun thing to do with Franklins is to use a Whitman Album with a blank cover and blank pages. Then using thier press on Gold letters/numbers make an Album starting with Franklins and continuing on with the Kennedy ones. One of my many odd ball types of collections is like that.
I've done that with many other types of coins also. Makes this hobby a little on the my own person fun type of hobby. A blank Album with Liberty Head/Mercury Head/Roosevelt Dimes for example. You have to leave out all the error and proof ones though or gets to full. Same with Nickels. Liberty Head/Buffalo/Jefferson.
I've got well over 100 Albums and this sort of makes it all different and not so boring.

Since you like Franklins, why not try a District Set of $100 notes along with the coins. That would be a very nice Franklin project. You could even consider adding the Series 1914 Large Size Blue Seal $100 Franklin to it as well.

    Good luck in your choice.

    Oh that would be great!!!
    But he said:
"I am trying to stay within my spending limits"

So he could start with the currents for now and work from there.

    Rickie,
I appreciate you suggestion and will think about it. I would only be lying if I told you I collected FBN however I dont. I need to read into them before jumping in and buying them :)

    Shoewrecky:

Here is the Large Size example for you.
The Series 1914 Blue Seal $100 (Fed Reserve Note). What a great set that would be all the .50 Frankies, An example of the Large Size and the District Set of Small Size... and quite the long term project. Of recent I have deleted most all my small size notes from photobucket as I embark on the task of re-scanning all the small size to organize them. This will take a considerable amount of time, however, I will "get er done"
