Hi gang, I am currently finishing up my Jefferson Nickel collection and was thinking of starting a new collection shortly. I was going to try to either complete a Ben Franklin Halves or Eisenhower Dollars. I am trying to stay within my spending limits and feel that these two choices are realitively reasonable that I can complete. If you had a choice which would you choose? Do you think that either of these are under or over valued/priced and that there maybe a better set out there to start. Thoughts and suggestions are always appreciated. Thank you, -Shrek
Congrats on finishing up on a series and embarking on a new one Shrek. Frankies are going to cost you more to collect than Eisenhower's but still are reasonably priced. Lots of varieties with the Ike's, so you might have fun deciding how heavy you want to get into that sort of thing. I'm pretty straight forward and don't get too caught up with varieties.
I am working on Franklins right now myself and they ar'nt to pricey and are silver to boot so I vote Franklins.:smile
I am also pretty new and I recently completed a collection of Franklins, and I would highly recommend them. The prices are reasonable and you learn a lot from collecting these coins.
Go with the Franklins,I completed one set already NGC ms64+FBLS and a raw set to boot now working on the proofs to go with it.It wasnt that bad the 53s was the toughest had to settle for a ms65 instead.
You'll do better with the Franklins. They're 90% silver as compared to the Ikes, and IMHO, better looking than the Ikes. They're you can get some good deals on proofs as well as MS Franklins. I picked this one up for $15.
Collect what you like the best! If you're having trouble deciding, start out by getting a couple of each and then see where that takes you and see which set you find yourself wanting to keep going with.
Of the two, I actually like the Ikes better. I really like outer space related stuff and you get that with the Ike. Not to say I don't like the Franklin, I just like the Ike more. It's also a smaller set so completion shouldn't be that hard. What you could do is both at once, just look around and if you see examples you like from both series, get them!
I really like both series. You cannot go wrong either way. I would lean toward the Franklins due to silver content though. One plus for the Ikes is that you can still sometimes get them from the bank. TC
My vote is for the Franklins, too! You can buy a complete set of MS & PF Ikes for about $225 in a Dansco. Chris
Thanks guys I appreciate the suggestions.. Chris, a complete set for $225 seems pretty reasonable..probably a lot better than if I bought them individually. (I am sure it's not the same experience but none the less in the end it would save some money!)
I'm gonna have to put the glasses back on. I could have sworn Chris's reponse read Franklins for that price. Sorry....
No biggie! I forget my glasses sometimes, too! One time I went into a restroom and asked a woman what she was doing in the men's room. Then I realized that there were no urinals. Chris
