Anybody else really bad at selling anything from your collection?

(Whoops! I wanted to post this in coin chat. Mods, you can move if you want.)

This was brought up before but I just caught myself failing again this afternoon.

So I want a nice big touch screen, double din, CD/DVD/Ipod/Satellite/Bluetooth/GPS Nav radio for my new ride. Not out of reach but equivalent in price to the last 3 receivers combined, that I've purchased for my vehicles.

Anxious to get the project under way while keeping the wife happy, I thought, "I will just keep this clean and easy..... sell a couple coins, maybe even a partial set, to at least 'help' absorb the cost." "No big deal, right?"

Well, I start scanning my software. Hmmm. What can I part with? One set I swore I'd never part with again, so not an option. Too beloved. Another set I just started. The other set I thought about how much work I had in it so far and couldn't part with that one. Every coin I look at I come up with a reason why "I can't sell that one!". I guess you could call it, "Icantsellthatone syndrome".

    But it doesn't stop there.

By the time I get done looking at some of the photos and looking at lists, I start thinking about some of the 'easy' empty spots I've got. Then I stray off course to the point where I'm thinking about BUYING more coins to fill those spots. Then I've completely forgotten about why I went there to look around in the first place!

So that was useless. I must be one wire cross away from being on an episode of Hoarders.

I've sold things in the past. Coins though, I really have a problem with. I feel like I can't give away 'treasure' for an electronic device that will devalue. Even though the coins do nothing and I almost never look at them, where as the radio I could use on a regular basis.

What do you guys think? Probably a stupid question here but.... Sell or Hold? And do you share this problem? I don't even want to sell duplicates or junk silver!

Sounds like the difference of sleeping in the doghouse, or next to the wifey.

:mouth: lol Nah, I don't get in the dog house that easily. I usually try to convince her that my escapades are (somehow) for her benefit also.

    My rule of hand;

Never sell anything that will almost certainly appreciate to purchase something that will almost certainly depreciate. That is just bad financial management.

I have realized that sometimes you need to part with things you don't love right now and use it to get things you need right now. But if you have the cash around and aren't hurting then don't sell the things you love to buy other things. I am always moving coins out of my collections as I find I've just lost interest in some things and need to move on to bigger and better collecting opportunities. But, if that is not you then don't do it.

I can't understand why it is such a dilemma for you. There is an obvious and very simple solution.

Sell the car and use public transportation!

    Too close to home.

This subject really grabbed my eye.

Wifey has a nomadic gene that makes her have to throw stuff away.

I come from a long line of hoarders. Sometimes I just put up an outbuilding and load it with excess stuff for later use.

But when it comes to electronics we seem to be able to agree. Most new Gizmoes are outdated &/or non~functional within 24 months. and then the "How do we recycle this?" topic comes out.

I love digital cameras and what they can do. She loves photos.

But I hate digital cameras because they are prone to failure and are no longer "supported" and can not be repaired.

So I keep an old pickup truck (1985) that can be returned to service with tools I keep...to drive to the doghouse.......(up on the river).....

Where I stash some old coins that can be turned into fishing lures.

Nothing like silver with moving parts, is there?:)

And if it gets caught in a snag........so be it.

Try not to be obsessive. The best way to make the AllMighty laugh is to tell him~

    I agree.

It really isn't than painful. For me $120 a month - can't beat that!

We I thought I would never sell anything. Then I got to looking at it and somethings would never get completed, some were duplicates - I like varieties, but I don't want to collect by varieties. I narrowed it down to what I wanted to keep. So I started working with 900fine to offload all the excess stuff. This is working well for me and I hope him. I had too much excess. I might even narrow it down again - have to decide on a couple of sets. I am also using part of the money to do the graded middle date set I am putting together.

  11. I feel your pain. I think I suffer from "Icantsellthatone syndrome" with coins too. The only remedy is to buy more. :smile TC

Just a typical coin collector. At least that describes me. The only coins I ever sold without regret are Gold coins I got for just that purpose. Of course I fed my copper habit with the proceeds.

The coins I remember are the one I thought I'd never miss and sold when I needed cash badly. I always think of how much better off I'd feel if I'd just found another way.

If you look at my 1803 thread, you'll see that I tend to hold on to my cents even after I upgrade.

That's where I draw the line. Duplicates of a lesser grade are sold off. There's enough silver in my collection already in case it took a massive price liftoff. Do feel your pain though, I don’t really have an interest in cents but darned if I’ve sold any of these old pennies.

2/3's of my collection was bought for speculation. Just waiting for the right time to sell - so, no problem parting them.

Wait six months to a year to buy that electronic for 1/2 the price.

That's probably the best answer. I was thinking the same thing. The one I want is a 2010 model. A year's time ought to be good for 1/2 price cut on ebay. I think I will just try to forget about it for the time being.

But by that time there will be a bigger (or smaller in case of technology) and better piece of equipment.

I truely believe that every collector should sell part/some/all/etc of their collection just to get a better understanding of the market and how it works.

A few years ago I sold part of my collection, and I'm getting ready to do it again. I go through my collection and pull out any coin that means something special to me, or is something I would have a hard time replacing. The rest, gets put in the sell stack.

I can't do it either. I've sold my watches my custom blades and even bullion but I can't part with any of my coins.

i sold off 1 coin for electronics before. let me first start off by saying, i love electronics, i love fixing them, using them and modifying them(when possible). i was very lucky to be given my first set of coins. in them coins there was a 09-s-vdb, 1899 gold $5, 1899 gold $10 eagle, and 1899 gold $20 double eagle(all S mm, except the $10). there was also a bunch of silver. before i even knew i was getting these, my girlfreind had them and used $20 worth of franklin halves for cigarettes:mad::eek:! there is also about $500 in silver quarters. i sold $150 worth. anyway..

my friend needed money and had a nintendo wii, a laptop, 42'' 1080p sony lcd tv, and 22'' lcd tv(i wanted it for a computer screen). it was either he got $500 or went to jail for not paying a fine. i was broke at the time and didn't want to part with any coins and also didn't want to take advantage of his misfortune. after a few hours of him begging me and saying he will just sell it to someone else anyway, i caved. i really had been looking to get everything he had anyway. and it would have cost $2,835( the sony tv alone is 1899.99, its the top of the line model)!

i ended up selling the $10 gold coin(because it didn't match wit the "s" mm), for only $475:(. i got ripped off but it was the only place opened and he had to get the money in. it was vary hard to complain because of the deal i got, but it just didn't feel right missing that coin, i was upset, even though i loved the stuff i got.

well a few weeks later, my girlfriends mother who gave me most of the coins said she found a coin in a jewelry box. to my surprise it was the same exact coin! only this one had the "S" mm. so it went with the set even better! it may sound very unlikely to happen, but i have already posted pictures of the $10 gold coins and plan to get some nice shots of the triplets together!

i guess everyone is different and the radio will be used more, but for me at least, it was very hard to do and still am a little upset over it. i am usually the type of person that "everything is for sale for the right price". i am having a hard time letting go of the searched wheats i have!

I thought I would never part with any of my Morgans until I got laid off when my boss closed his shop two years ago. So, I started going through the multiples upon multiples of the common dates of mostly MS63's to bring in some much needed cash. I sold a few to a couple of local dealers, and I was barely able to break even on them. I knew that I couldn't afford to keep selling them that way. Then, of all things, I came across a pawn shop owner who was bitten by the "coin bug", and he was paying me better than CDN Ask for any and all of the common date Morgans and very close to retail for duplicates of my modern commems. It wasn't that I took advantage of his inexperience because I would often spend hours with him explaining how the market works, what he could expect to get from other dealers if he chose to sell to them and what he could realistically get if he sold them to his pawn shop customers. He was happy with the deals, and I was happy that I was able to keep my head above water.
