I went to a flea market tonight and bought a 70 mint set (second mint set) because this one contained a 70-s small date. I was going to rip the set up so that I can put the 70-s (AU55) in my Dansco Album.

Should I leave it in the set or can i put it in my album?

    Thanks

  3. Those mint sets do sell at a premium when they include the small date Lincoln, so it may be worth keeping it intact and trying to buy a single higher grade example for your Dansco. How does the Kennedy half look? TC

Kennedy has a couple minor nicks in the cheek. But there is a nice long stratch to the left of his face unfortunately.

I gotta agree with TC. Keep that set in OGP and go out and buy another '70 to crack out for the Dansco.....:smile Heck, they are rather reasonable in price, but the small date set? MOOLA.....

Yeah, why is the '70-S cent circulated if it is still in the original packaging?

I always thought that mint sets contain MS (BU) coins. If they were never put into circulation then maybe, what you're looking at is a MS 60, 61 0r 62 that has a lot of contact marks bur no actual wear. In the OGP there should be NO wear.

I would definitely save the Mint Set intact. The coin sells for less than the premium for the set with a SD cent.

Go and find another SD cent. Keep the Mint Set. You'll be glad that you did.

I said AU55 to give you an idea of what it would like it. Even though it's in the mint packaging, the coin has many minor nicks (chin, cheeks, shoulder blades, etc) and Lincoln's bow tie / lapel(sp?) is fairly worn.

I did not know that..Thanks for the lesson.

Believe it or not the coins in these sets are not only unc but they are very very choice compared to the bottom half of coins made for circulation. A lot of people just wouldn't believe the quality of the coins being put in circulation in those days. '70's Lincolns weren't all that bad but some coins were almost always just terrible. This is one of the biggest reasons that rolls can be almost nonexistent for many of these coins. Of course a deep and abiding lack of interest didn't help.

A lot of times strike weakness appears to be wear but all these coins really are unc.
